Winter Music ConcertOn Thursday, December 6, musicians from the Middle and Upper Divisions gathered in the Janet Root Theater for the annual Winter Concert.
This year, in addition to the Beginning, Intermediate and Concert Bands, the performance also featured the Middle Division Broadway Chorus under the direction of Michael McCarthy (a Broadway performer himself) assisted by his equally talented wife, Stephanie. The chorus put everyone in a holiday mood with a beautiful performance of "Walking in the Air" from "The Snowman" along with several other seasonal favorites. The fourth grade Beginning Band opened the evening with a "rocking" performance that showed off the exceptional talents of these young musicians. The Intermediate Band followed with two numbers that demonstrated that the group was equally at home with symphonic and pop music styles. Shorecrest sophomore Yesol J. mesmerized the audience with a beautiful piano solo that revealed only a small part of her many talents. She also plays violin and baroque recorder! The Concert Band added some excitement to the evening with a scintillating performance of Khatchaturian's "Sabre Dance."
The "All that Jazz Band" got the place jumping with a finger-snapping version of the R&B classic "Comin' Home Baby." The Concert Band's final piece paid homage to the music of J.S. Bach. The evening ended with all participants joining with the audience in a rousing rendition of "Frosty the Snowman." The audience's enthusiastic response to the final number provided the perfect finishing touch to a delightful evening of music. |
The following students were selected to display their beautiful works at the Salvador Dali juried Student Surrealistic Art Exhibit:
Photos of WinnersSideways StoriesThe American Stage School Tour brought a play adapted from Louis Sachar's Sideways Stories from Wayside School to Shorecrest's third, fourth, and fifth graders on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Message from Mr. MurphyPass It On
In his newest book, Five Minds of the Future, Dr. Howard Gardner identifies "Respect" as one of the five areas of thinking important for leading a fruitful life. The book is very thought provoking. I hesitated to pull out two sentences to highlight the topic of respect; however, these statements reminded me of the importance of the work parents and teachers share. Dr. Gardner writes: "By the age of five, at the latest, the lines for friendship and hostility, group inclusion or group exclusion, love or hatred, have already been drawn…." "By the time that young persons become adolescents or young adults, their attitude toward others is pretty well fixed; barring extremely unusual circumstances, one's stance toward other groups is unlikely to change fundamentally…." If one accepts these observations from a man renowned worldwide for his theory of multiple intelligences, then the value of early childhood and elementary education increases exponentially. The messages, signals and lessons parents and teachers of young children present will last for a lifetime. This puts a premium on having parents and teachers who are committed to having their children grow up in a society that values respect. How are we prepared to meet this challenge? Every time I visit the Alpha (3-year olds) and Jr. Kindergarten and kindergarten classes, I am impressed with the ability of our teachers to guide very little children into productive activity. Anyone who has ever managed a birthday party for little children knows there is a lot to do to help youngsters to share, take turns and sit quietly. Nonetheless, the children at Shorecrest are fortunate to have well-educated, talented, creative and infinitely patient teachers who love helping young children develop in a happy and healthy environment. During the past three years in the first days of school, I have witnessed a miracle seeing the Early Childhood Center and kindergarten teachers assemble 14-20 children and, after a few hours have them engaged in fun and productive activities as if the children had been doing so forever. We all realize that unless the parents of our youngest children are spending time with their children and teaching them how to listen, how to help and how to be with others, our work would be infinitely more complex. Of course, the work of a parent is never completed. Again, I will refer to the thoughts from Dr. Gardner. Our efforts to employ an honor code and to have our students treat each other with respect cannot happen unless our parents are teaching and expecting respect. We are in the season of the year that honors the tradition of giving. I hope we all continue to share with our children the gifts of love and respect for the different people they encounter. Service LearningFour R's in the Upper DivisionRecycle • Reuse • Reduce • RethinkFour new recycling collection centers have been added to the Upper Division lunch area to help students recycle.
The newly formed Green Team, led by sophomores Rachel B., Hallie A., and Crawford H., has been busy raising awareness and organizing to take the collected items to the drop-off centers. Junior Emily M. said, "The recycling efforts are going very well in the Upper Division. Students constantly remind each other to recycle instead of just throwing out their bottles or cans. It's a great success!" Others on the Green Team, including Kyle W. and Jaci R., are focusing on "reusing" and "reducing" aspects of conservation. The Green Team's goal is to get the entire Shorecrest community "rethinking." Food Bank Volunteers NeededFood is central to so many of the celebrations at this time of the year, and the St. Petersburg Free Clinic's Food Bank provides hundreds of holiday food baskets to those in need in our local community. The Food Bank needs volunteers to sort food items in preparation for their holiday food distribution. If you're available to work after school, 3:30-5 p.m. beginning on Wed., Dec. 12 through Dec. 19, please contact Su Stevens. This is a great activity for the entire family - even the young Shorecrest students, 42 inches and taller, are welcome to lend a hand. Please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510 if you have any questions or need more information about any of these service activities. What is your favorite among your family's holiday traditions?Driving to the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel - and running from the 30 degrees outside in our swimsuits and coats to the heated indoor pool. We like to drink hot apple cider. Christmas Eve with my favorite people in the world, snuggling on the couch, fire blazing (windows and doors open if necessary) watching Christmas Vacation and laughing till we cry! Sitting around the camp fire and singing songs from Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers! I think it is hot chocolate and candy canes. They are yummy! I also think that reading is good because I get so much time off of school so I have time to enjoy fine books! I love decorating the tree with nothing but popcorn and blueberries. Camping with my family, grandparents and cousins during Thanksgiving. My favorite part is decorating the house and yard like a magical winter wonderland. We put up beautiful white and blue lights, put up Santa decorations, and of course... the huge "Frosty the Snowman" in the front yard. Opening one present on Christmas Eve. The turkey with a ton of gravy at Thanksgiving. I just really love food! The Nestors' cookie exchange! Decorating the Christmas tree. Getting lotsa stuff and when my mom sets off the smoke detector with the potatoes. Putting up the Christmas Tree, saying prayers together to Jesus every day starting December first, eating leftover turkey (we always buy a lot for turkey day), and inviting a gazillion people over for an annual excellent brilliant Christmas party. We always go to Missouri - it takes two days! Decorating our Christmas tree. Our tradition is to spend time with the family. I love putting the tree up and listening to Christmas music as we watch the snow fall. Just being together for once is a great tradition in of itself. Happy holidays, all! Decorating and unwrapping and having fun! |

| Girls Varsity SoccerThe Chargers traveled to Indian Rocks Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and won 3-1. Jenn C. was a standout, scoring all three goals.
On Wednesday, Dec. 5, the Chargers hosted Tampa Prep and lost in a very close game by the score of 3-2. Goals were scored by Jenn C. and Erin M. Girls JV SoccerOn Wednesday evening, Dec. 5, the Girls JV Soccer team hosted Tampa Prep and came away with a 3-1 victory. This was the second meeting between the two teams this season and the second 3-1 win for the Chargers. Goals were scored by Hayley J., Nicole P., and Tori D. Kathryn K. picked up two assists in the win. The midfield was controlled by Tanja G. and Danielle S. Once again Rachel B. played an outstanding game at sweeper. Sara M. nearly broke the game wide open early in the second half, just missing the net on a breakaway. The girls remain undefeated at 4-0 and look forward to their toughest match of the season next Wednesday at home against Clearwater Central Catholic. Girls Middle Division Soccer Green TeamThe Girls Middle Division Green Soccer Team played a tremendous game despite their 2-1 loss to St. Stephen's last Thursday, Nov. 29. Down by a score of 2-0 at the half, the entire team rallied and scored on a beautiful shot by Caitlin A. with about ten minutes left in the game. With the score 2-1, Shorecrest kept the pressure up on shots by Sophia G. and Amanda I.
The defense under the leadership of Rachel P., Hannah W., Skyler E. and Erica S. kept St. Stephen's under control. Assata T., Jade C., Caitlin A., Teagan C., Alexis O., and Sam M. all worked hard at midfield. Morgan D. and Sydney K. hustled throughout their playing time. The final result was a loss, but all the Shorecrest girls showed a lot of heart and never gave up. Girls Middle Division Soccer Gold TeamThe Shorecrest Girls Middle Division Gold team got off to a slow start in Tuesday night's rematch against Pinellas Prep. Although Shorecrest won the first-ever game between the schools three weeks ago, 6-3, Pinellas Prep took an early lead and held on to win 3-2 despite not scoring in the second half.
Shorecrest goals were scored by Julia B. (her team-leading sixth for the season) and Rachel A. Annie C. and Sarah L. were outstanding as stoppers, particularly in the second half. Midfielder Kelly H. and defender Taylor W. also had excellent games. Boys Varsity SoccerOn Thursday, Nov. 29, the Chargers traveled to Clearwater to play Calvary Christian. The team played as well as they have played all season long, but unfortunately they gave up two big plays. To the team's credit they never gave up and didn't crumble under the pressure of playing from behind. The Chargers controlled the game and possession of the ball, but just couldn't get through their opponent's defense to get off enough dangerous shots on goal. The two goals they did score came from Stephen S. with two perfectly placed balls. Coming into Friday's (Nov. 30) game against Tampa Prep both teams were undefeated. Although we lost 3-0 and didn't get revenge for last year's drubbing, we proved to ourselves and them that we are a very good team and one to be reckoned with. On Monday, Dec. 3, the Chargers hosted Canterbury and won 6-0. Phil V. had the first two goals, followed by Anthony H. and Evan J. At halftime the score was 4-0. The scoring was topped off in the second half by Quinn E. and Jeong K. to give the Chargers a 6-0 victory. Boys JV SoccerThe Boys JV Soccer team played Tampa Prep last Thursday, Nov. 29, at home and won 1-0. Early in the second half Ryan D. scored a goal, his second of the season. On Friday, Nov. 30, the Chargers traveled to Berkeley Prep and won 5-3. Jordan C. had a three-goal hat trick, Matt S. had a goal, and sophomore Frank R. got the game-winner in the second half to break a 3-3 tie. Jordan C. has a team-leading five goals, and Matt S. has three. The Chargers have a 3-0 record and have scored 14 goals so far this season. They have held their opponents to 3 goals. Boys Middle Division Soccer Green TeamThe Middle Division Boys Soccer Green team played a tough opponent last Friday and lost 3-1 to St. Paul's. The Chargers trailed 2-1 at the half, but were unable to convert on multiple chances in the second half. St. Paul's put the game out of reach with five minutes left as the Chargers were pressing for the tying goal. Rheese W. posted the only goal for Shorecrest.
The team rebounded quickly with a 8-0 win over Canterbury on Tuesday, Dec. 4. It was a total team effort; eight different players scored, and there were 5 assists. Both Alex H. and Rheese W. scored and notched two assists to lead the way. The team is halfway through the season and owns a 4-1 record. At this point the Chargers have scored 27 goals and allowed only 3. Boys Middle Division Soccer Gold TeamThe Middle Division Boys Gold team played their best game of the year on Tuesday, Dec. 4 sinking Admiral Farragut 5-0. Goalkeeper Alex G. had an easy time of it, recording his first shutout. The defensive backline led by Matt B. and featuring Tristin T., Gavin P. and Logan E. constantly disrupted the Farragut attack and limited scoring opportunities.
Bak M. played an outstanding game at stopper. His aggressive and determined play helped Shorecrest control the midfield area through the entire game. Connor P., Max F., Chris H. and Aleksi H. dazzled the crowd with their combination passing and offensive runs. Aleksi H. started the scoring for Shorecrest. Connor P. added two goals in the first half of play and displayed outstanding field vision during the contest. Kenny S. brought the game to a rousing conclusion, scoring two goals during the last five minutes of play. The victory was the result of a total team effort and the entire roster saw significant playing time. |
