"How to Listen so that your Children Will Talk"

Join us as Dr. Pam Hamilton, Upper Division AP Psychology Teacher and Guidance Counselor, shares how we can listen to our children to open up the lines of communication in our homes. Talking is only a small portion of the communication process. Listening skills and attending to body language are equally important. Dr. Hamilton will address several communication "blockers" and the role of empathic listening in developing a nurturing relationship with our children.
Dr. Hamilton has an MS in Marital and Family Therapy and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology. She is a great asset to the Shorecrest community, and she has years of educational, practical and professional experience that can help every family meet their potential. Please join us in the Student Activity Center for this illuminating talk.
The responses to the invitations have been terrific from those Grandparents and Special Friends who will be guests of our students on Friday, February 1. This year will be the 24th occasion to recognize this special group of people who are so important in the lives of our students. Please remind those who will be attending to RSVP to the Office of Advancement: dshenkman @shorecrest.org or by fax to (727) 521-1452 or by phone (727) 456-7515.
As always, we appreciate our families honoring the tradition of leaving the theatre seating for Grandparents and Special Friends. With the limited number of seats in the theatre, it is impossible for us to accommodate parents and guests. There are very few times that we ask parents not to attend a school function. This is one of those times, as it will help us accommodate as many guests as possible.
Thank you for your assistance.
By overwhelming requests, we will be taking Polaroid photos of our students with their Grandparents or Special Friends to give away as a keepsake of this special day. This has been such a popular memento in previous years.
If you have a Polaroid camera that you would be willing to loan for this day and/or if you want to volunteer as a photographer to help with the photos, please contact Kris Bodner (727) 510-5058 or Christi Mills (727) 415-6300.
You can also drop cameras off at the Advancement Office, across from the Mini Gym, anytime between now and Wednesday, January 30. Please make sure your camera is labeled with your name.
American Cancer Society created this event to give communities an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.
It's an 18-hour overnight campout where teams of people of all ages take turns walking, jogging or running around the track. Teams raise money before, during and after the Relay to help fund a cure for cancer.

Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.
It allows our community to grieve for those lost to cancer, celebrate those who have survived, and recognize the caregivers.
Won't you join us at Relay For Life this year?
Please see the Parents Page of the website for additional school information.
If you need to change your e-mail address or would like to add additional e-mail addresses, please send your e-mail addresses to the registrar at jroberge@shorecrest.org. Thanks!

Topping Off CeremonyThe "Topping Off" ceremony at Landy Hall took place on Friday, January 11. Craig Lambertson, President of DeLotto & Sons, welcomed the crowd and explained the origin of the "Topping Off" custom, which occurs after the building's structure is completed. This practice can be traced back to the Scandinavians who placed a tree on top of new buildings to appease any tree-dwelling spirits that had been displaced in the construction process.
Afterwards, Capital Campaign co-chairs Cathy Collins and Pam Murphy thanked all the parent, faculty and staff donors.
| Students in grades 7-12 watched as Headmaster Mike Murphy was lifted to the top of the building, where the tree had already been placed, to plant the American flag. Students in the Upper Division signed their names on a white flag that was also placed on the top of the building by Assistant Headmaster and Head of Upper Division Stephen Manella.
After a few closing remarks by Mr. Murphy and some applause and cheers by the students, the ceremony was completed. Tours of the building were given to Board Members and faculty and staff, and FLIK served a delicious lunch to thank all of the construction workers as well as Board Members and VIPs. |
Ident-A-Kid Coming to ShorecrestOn Tuesday, January 22, Ident-A-Kid Services representatives will be on campus to prepare ID cards for students in all divisions (EC through UD). Forms and flyers have been mailed home. Founded in 1986, Ident-A-Kid Services of America, Inc., is the pioneer in child identification. Through its 200-plus programs, Ident-A-Kid annually provides over three million ID cards to parents at schools and other locations throughout the United States.
The cost is one card for $7, three cards for $10, and five cards for $15. Shorecrest has been participating in this program for over ten years, and it is a service provided through the Shorecrest Parent Association. An Ident-A-Kid card is an Immediate Response card designed to provide parents and law enforcement officials with the crucial information should your child become missing. The driver's license-like card contains your child's photograph, fingerprint and description. Parents should keep the card with them at all times and in a emergency can provide law enforcement with it for immediate response. This program is open to siblings of Shorecrest students. If you would like to bring younger children, just stop by after 8:30 a.m. on Jan 22 and we will be glad to provide this very important service. Forms must be returned on Tuesday, January 22 with money to have childrens' photos taken for the identification card. Please note that your child's information is NOT kept in any national data bank. It is provided on the card only. Parent volunteers are needed to help out on January 22. If interested, please contact Jean Johnston. Arts BeatPrinceton Triangle Show at Shorecrest
Excerpt from the New York Times: The bus tour was the narrative backbone of "A Turnpike Runs Through It," a musical-revue hybrid of more than two hours that owes something to both "Saturday Night Live" and "Little Shop of Horrors." More than sixty Princeton undergraduates did the writing and composing as well as the singing, dancing and acting.
The Triangle Club, which dates to 1883, is the country's oldest college-based musical comedy troupe, and besides performing on campus, the group stages an annual touring musical. Alumni include F. Scott Fitzgerald, the producer David E. Kelley, and Brooke Shields, who was in Triangle the same years as Glen Pannell, director of this year's show and a 1987 graduate of Princeton who lives in Manhattan. For more than a century, Princeton University's famous Triangle Show has been a portal through which bright, creative young writers, performers and producers have passed on their way to careers in the entertainment arts. Each year, their all-new original musical-comedy has it's World Premiere at the Broadway-sized McCarter Theatre in Princeton - "The House That Triangle Built" - and then takes off on a National Tour.
(Link to New York Times online article) This year's show is A Turnpike Runs Through It - A New Jersical, and it's coming to the Tampa Bay Area! In the new musical, Princeton's home state of New Jersey gets spoofed for the first time in Triangle history. The show is recommended for ages ten and up. 2008 All-State Band StudentsLast week, three of Shorecrest's band students were asked to perform at the 2008 All-State Bands, made up of the best band students in Florida. Seventh grader Cissy R., a french horn player, was selected by audition to perform with the All-State Middle School Band. She was one of only eight horns selected and the only seventh grader in her section. Ninth grade flutist Rachel A. was selected through an audition process to the ninth and tenth grade All-State Concert Band. Almost 4,000 students auditioned for the bands from which only about 500 were selected.
Eleventh grader Gabe N., who plays the alto sax, performed in the Small School Honor Band. This band is made up of high school students who are nominated by their band directors based on exceptional musical achievement. Beginning last Thursday, all of the bands rehearsed for two full days starting each day at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m. with two 90-minute breaks for lunch and dinner. The students played extremely difficult and challenging music in a variety of styles. The culminating event was a concert at the Tampa Convention Center last Saturday at noon. Band Director Mr. Glaister said, "I attended all the performances and was amazed at the quality and maturity of the groups. Each band sounded thoroughly polished and professional. Overall, it was an awesome experience." Summer Programs 2008Happy 2008! It is with much excitement and joy that I welcome you to Shorecrest Summer Programs 2008!
