Students in grades K-12 are holding a penny collection drive at Shorecrest to help educate the children of Central Asia.
Pennies for Peace and the Central Asia Institute (CAI) were started by American mountaineer Greg Mortenson, who wrote Three Cups of Tea, One Man's Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time. After a failed attempt at climbing K-2, he wanted to re-pay the inhabitants of an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakoram Mountains, who took care of him and saved his life, by building the children of the village a school.

Mortenson wanted to promote the idea that a penny, considered virtually worthless in the U.S., can buy a pencil in Pakistan and Afghanistan and open the door to literacy. Since 1993, he's helped build nearly 60 schools in that region of the world.
The drive is underway with collection jars in each of the K-4 classrooms and in the Lower, Middle and Upper Divisions' offices. The collection will end on May 15 and the total will be donated to the Central Asia Institute on May 16 in honor of Penny Jennings on Penny Jennings Day at Shorecrest.
If you have questions, please contact Su Stevens, Director of Service Learning, at sstevens@ shorecrest.org or 727-456-7510.
We're looking for a few parent volunteers with digital cameras and cars who are willing to drive to various locations and take photos during the various Community Service Day activities around town. If you're available to help from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, April 18, please contact Su Stevens. Your photos will help us document this day, and they may be displayed in E-Bytes.

Run, do not walk, to register for Shorecrest's Second Annual Under the Lights Duathlon on Friday, April 18th at 6 p.m. Click here for the registration form.

Ask any participating family from last year, and you will find that the Duathlon, sponsored by the Shorecrest Booster Club, was one of the best events all year. Your children will be fed, get exercise, have fun, and receive a medal for accomplishing an amazing race, all for only $20. What a great way to spend a Friday evening!
The Duathlon is a race for children in Alpha through eighth grade. The event consists of the children doing a specific distance run, biking a specific distance, and then running another distance.
Everyone is a winner when they cross the finish line and receives a medal. The top three winners for each race - both boy and girl races - will receive trophies.
Participants MUST have a bicycle, helmet, and wear sneakers, but training wheels are allowed.
All participating students will receive race t-shirts, race goodie bags filled with "stuff," medals, and a pizza dinner just for doing the race. There will also be a bounce house and great raffle prizes given out that night from the Vinoy, Boston Bill Sunglasses, Einstein's Bagels, Evos, and Florida Bicycle Sports, to name a few.
Register up until the 11th and the price is only $15. If you wait, the price goes up to $20, so all you have to do is register! Registration forms have been mailed to all Shorecrest families, so send in those forms, or click on the link to download a PDF file of the form.
Also, we need adult and older student volunteers for the event. Please e-mail us at duathlon@ shorecrest.org.
