Relief Efforts for Hurricane Katrina
We have received many inquiries from concerned Shorecrest families regarding
the devastation caused in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama by Hurricane
Katrina. Understandably, there is a lot of chaos in these areas,
making communication difficult. We are assessing the situation to see
how the Shorecrest community can best help those schools and families
who are in need. However, student leaders, faculty and administration
from all divisions met on Thursday afternoon to brainstorm on ways to
centralize our relief efforts. At the meeting, there were many wonderful
suggestions from students on ways in which the Shorecrest community can
be of service to the hurricane victims.
The Upper Division is selling
Shorecrest flip flops (see E-Bytes article below),
implementing the "Jar
Wars" class competition, and selling raffle tickets at home football
games. There will also be an all-school Walk-a-thon open to all Shorecrest
students, faculty, administration and families for participation. All
of the proceeds from these events will be donated to the Red Cross for
Hurricane Katrina victims. More detailed information will be sent home
to parents and written about in E-Bytes.
In addition, we are in contact with a number of families (who are connected
to current Shorecrest families) who may be temporarily relocating to
this area and enrolling in our school. None of these arrangements are
definite, but the Shorecrest community will be notified as soon as we
have more information and a plan to help those in need. Thank you for
your inquiries, concern and generosity.

All
parents are invited to attend our Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September
13 at 7 p.m. in the Janet Root Theatre. Students will bring home a
copy of their Day One schedule, and we will have backup copies available.
This evening will give you a wonderful opportunity to meet teachers and
to have a glimpse into your child's school day. We look forward
to seeing you there!
Flip Flops Are Coming!
The
Upper Division Shorecrest flip flops will be
on sale next week for Middle Division students. These shoes will be allowed
on Spirit Day, September 16, and will be a great addition to Shorecrest
accessories. Students will bring home a flyer with details.
21st Century Cave Painting
The sixth graders and Mrs. Wells studied the most ancient art forms
with a modern twist this week in Ancient Civilizations. After learning
about the cave paintings in Lascaux, France, the students attempted to
create their own with the help of Adobe Photoshop.

Students downloaded
cave wall images and then used the program tools to draw, smudge, color,
and even darken the cave wall with smoke. By using the computer,
students were able to manipulate the images so that they looked like
they came right off the historic cave walls.
Charger Grams Debut
This week Middle Division athletes received surprises on their lockers.
As the athletic seasons kicked off, students found Charger Grams attached
to the front of their lockers wishing them well.

Mrs. Williams' seventh
grade homebase chipped in by making Shorecrest football magnets to
hold the message to the locker. As the year progresses, students will
get Charger Grams for their participation in school activities or even
doing something great in class.
Exchange Program in Martinique: A Huge
Success!
The Middle Division exchange program with the Collège
de Terreville in Schoelcher, Martinique was created in order to improve
language skills, learn about new cultures and promote diversity and
understanding. It started out with the students from both countries
e-mailing each other and developed into an exchange of visits, thanks
to the hard work of the students' world language teachers, Mrs.
O'Horo
and Madame Chopin.

Following up a very successful visit by 23 students from Martinique
in February, 12 seventh and eighth grade students traveled to Martinique
right after exams in June. The students stayed with the families of the
students they had hosted in February and participated in a great number
of activities. Highlights
of the trip included sightseeing, kayaking, picnicking on the beach,
and even hiking up a volcano! It was truly an experience of a lifetime.
The seventh and eighth grade students in French classes are planning
another exchange this year. They hope to start e-mailing their
new pen pals in late September. Mrs. O'Horo is seeking
host families for a period of 10 days in late February-early March.
Any families of Middle Division French students interested in hosting,
please contact Mrs. O'Horo at koho@shorecrest.org as
soon as possible.
Lifeskills
The Study Skills Humanities curriculum began with students examining
the works of art by Romare Bearden (1911-1988). Romare Bearden had
a prolific and distinguished career experimenting with many different
mediums and artistic styles but is best known for his richly textured
collages. After joining the Harlem Artists Guild, Bearden embarked
on his lifelong study of art, gathering inspiration from Western
masters as well as African art and Byzantine mosaics.
Get "Board" in the Middle Division!
Check out the new bulletin board outside Mrs. Resler's room in the
Middle Division! Designed to focus on our students whose brains, beauty,
hobby or talent have come to the attention of local media, "News in
the Mews" is already filling up quickly! Read about student accomplishments
as you navigate around the Sher and Razook Centers and don't stop there:
clip any articles you read that highlight our children, and send them
to the Middle Division office. We don't want to miss anyone!

Early Childhood
A Great Turnout
Tuesday night's turnout for the Early Childhood Back-to-School
Night indicates that this year promises to be another great year of parental
participation and support!

Having a separate Back-to-School Night for EC allowed parents
of multiple children to spend more time in the grade of each one and
was greatly appreciated by both parents and teachers. Many thanks to
Gayle Horden and SPA for the refreshments and to Jan Lowry and Booster
Club volunteers for staying so late to offer the EC parents a chance
to buy fanfare items.
How Do You Build a Sunflower House?
Mrs. Lipan's class laid the foundation for theirs by planting
sunflower seeds in peat pots last week. Now the children are watering
and anxiously watching for sprouts to appear.

After the plants grow a
bit, the students will plant them, pots and all, in the EC garden on
the playground. In several months, the sunflower stalks should be big
enough for the children to play among and will make a wonderful place
for imaginative and socio-dramatic play.
Nimble Fingers
The development of fine motor skills is an important part of the Early
Childhood curriculum. Many of the daily activities incorporate ways to
exercise and develop the children's small muscle control. Transferring
objects from one container to another using a variety of implements like
tongs and spoons is one example of an activity that aids this development
and is very popular with the children.

Other related activities are working
with playdough, lacing, fingerpainting and using a wide variety of
art materials. Engaging in these and other similar activities helps the
children develop the muscle coordination and strength they will need
for the writing they will be required to do in later years.
Strong Bodies = Strong Minds
The Junior Kindergarten students love PE! The games and perceptual motor
activities in which they engage will lead to increased coordination,
greater strength and agility, and better body awareness.

They also help
the children develop their ability to listen, take turns, and work
cooperatively with others. Ask your children to show you what they do
during PE and give them the opportunity to play these games with you
at home.
Be a Participant in Your Child's School Experience
Children love to have their parents spend time with them in school,
and the more hands there are to help, the more exciting activities we
can offer. Join Betty Gootson on Wednesday, September 7 at 8:30 a.m.
in the Student Center to learn more about volunteering in the Early Childhood
Center. One of the topics will be helping your children adjust to sharing
you with their classmates.

Multiple Intelligences
It's not about how smart you are, it's about HOW you are smart. Third
graders assessed their likes and dislikes in a multiple intelligence
questionnaire. Scores for each of the eight intelligences were
tallied and recorded on a data sheet. The students took their data
to the computer lab and used the Graph Club software to display their
personal multiple intelligences.

This activity is based on Howard
Gardner's research on human intelligence. Gardner identified eight
distinct intelligence areas: Nature/Naturalist, Musical, Math/Logical,
Interpersonal, Kinesthetic, Linguistic/verbal, Intrapersonal, and Spatial. Many
students were amazed at the accuracy of the assessments.

What is Science?
This week the kindergarten students brainstormed "What is science?"
Next they visited each table featuring a different area of science: the
body ( 5 senses and health), life science (plants and animals), physical
science (how things move, magnets and tools, sink or float), and earth
science (weather and seasons, rocks and landforms).

The students participated
in activities to highlight each area that will be studied in depth
later in the year.
Back-to-School Night
The Lower Division Back-to-School Night (K-4) is on Thursday, September
8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Janet Root Theatre. Please be sure to bring your
personal calendar to mark important dates and party sign ups.
Hat Day
In celebration of the first graders completing their first story in
their reading book The Hat, the students wore all types
of hats to school. There were visors, ball caps, and even cowboy hats!

Kindergarten Parent Chat
You are invited to spend an informal time together talking about topics
of interest on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Instructional
Area of the library. Please let the Lower Division office know
if you plan to attend by Monday, September 19.
First Grade Social
Thank you to the Burwells for a lovely and lively First Grade
Social. A great time was enjoyed by all.
Picture Day
Picture Day for the EC through fourth grade will be in the morning
on Tuesday, September 6 in the Student Center. Please make sure your
child has the Picture Order with him/her on Tuesday, September 6. No
orders will be accepted after this date.
Upper Division
Clubs Assembly
On Wednesday, Upper Division students heard presentations from representatives
of the various service and academic clubs, as well as such groups as
the Chess Club and the Vegetarian Club.
During an extended morning break period, students munched
cookies while pondering what to sign up for this
year.
Test Calendar Is on the Web
Students and parents now can view the Test
Calendar for grades nine
through twelve. Tests and the due dates of major assignments are posted
there.
Because a calendar template is used, each item has an hour as
well as a date, but only the dates are meaningful. Some items refer to
multiple sections of a class.

the canteen at lunch time.
College Representative

Three Cheers for:
• A Shorecrest Senior for being accepted into the Telluride
Institute at Washington University this past summer. Applications requiring
six essays
were sent to 1,000 high school students with exceptional PSAT scores.
He was one of 18 selected to attend this prestigious program taught
at a college level by Washington University professors. The academically
rigorous six-week course focused on the transformation of the 20th century
American city in the World War II era to after the war. Students brainstormed,
participated in discussions and presented papers to find solutions to
problems that were discussed. At the end of the course, students presented
their individual papers. Congratulations!
