Holiday Gift DriveOn Friday morning, the Crisp Gym was turned into a holding area for masses of presents ranging from new bicycles tied up with red ribbons to clothing, electronics, household items and food. Class after class of students proudly brought in their presents and grinned at the piles of toys and gifts for 153 foster children in the area.
Kelly Rossi, a representative of Guardian ad Litem, spoke to students in grades 3-12 about the Guardian ad Litem program and the difference one person can make in helping another. Congratulations and pats on the back to the Holiday Gift Drive co-chairs Jean Cantanese and Paula Van Law as well as everyone who volunteered and contributed items. Middle DivisionGift DriveThe Middle Division students participated wholeheartedly in the Shorecrest Gift Drive. Mr Frank Tylman addressed the entire division last Friday morning, explaining the nature of the volunteer work that he does with Guardian ad Litem.
Students were moved by his descriptions of some of the challenges our recipients are facing. This Friday Ms. Kelly Rossi, a representative of Guardian ad Litem, spoke with the student body prior to their delivery of the gifts to the Crisp Gym. Thanks you, students and families, for your generosity. Study Hall NewsOur Middle Division After School Study Hall will end for this semester on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005. There will be no study hall supervision the following week on either Dec. 19 or Dec. 20, 2005. We hope that this early notice will help you plan for those two days. All the National Honor Society Tutors and Mrs. Dattilo wish you a safe, joyful and meaningful Holiday Season. See you in January! History FairMiddle Division's History Fair exhibits were on display in the Student Activity Center this week. Students could enter the competition as an individual or as part of a group. The theme for this year's competition is "Taking a Stand in History."
The results of the school competition will be in next week's E-Bytes. Those exhibits chosen by the judges will represent Shorecrest Middle Division at the Pinellas County History Fair at East Lake High School in February.
TIP News UpdateIf you are a seventh grade student that is participating in the Duke University TIP (Talent Identification Program) and have registered to take the SAT in January, please save two afternoons to attend two separate help sessions for the test. These sessions will focus on test taking skills and strategies and will serve to familiarize students with the directions and format of the test. The first help session will be for math and will be presented by Mrs. Beth Wall, the Head of the Math Department in the Upper Division on Wed., January 11, 2006 from 3:15 p.m until 5:00 p.m. Room is to be announced later. The second help session will be for the verbal and writing parts of the SAT and will be taught by Dr. Emerson Littlefield, the Head of the English Department in the Upper Division on Wed., January 18, 2006 from 3:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. That room will also be announced later. Students will need to bring materials with them. They will need to have paper, pencils, a calculator and the SAT Practice Book that has been sent to them in the mail. They may bring a snack also. Please make every effort to attend these two sessions before taking the actual test. Students in the past have always said how beneficial the help sessions have been to them in terms of giving them confidence and a good idea of what to expect regarding test format and timing. No athletic games are scheduled for these two dates. Please call Sue Dattilo, TIP Coordinator, with any questions at ext. 157. Quad-a-PaloozaAll seventh and eighth graders are invited to the Quad on December 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. for a different type of social activity, planned by the eighth grade Leadership Class. There will be a DJ in the Quad, but classrooms will be open for a variety of games. Dance Dance Revolution will be available, so don't miss it! Admission is $5. Boston and Washington TripsParents met last night in the Janet Root Theatre to discuss the class trips in April. Updated itineraries will be sent home next week, and deposits are due December 20. Please contact Mr. Davis at the Middle Division for further information. Lower DivisionProblem Solving and a GardenWe all know for a leaky faucet you should call a plumber. And if you need a cabinet built, you call a carpenter. But if you are a Lower Division principal and you need to figure out where and how big to start a school garden, who exactly could you call?
Mrs. Jennings was faced with this soil-filled mathematical dilemma, and she knew just who to call... the Puzzle Posse! This group of fourth graders was excited to be called upon to help figure out the size and layout of the soon to be established Their first step was to scope out the proposed location and take some measurements. After this, they had some questions and wanted some clarification from Mrs. Jennings on what she was looking for and what was needed. With the understanding that the garden needed to be split into five equal parts (one for kindergarten through fourth grade), they put their heads together and hit the drawing boards. After several lively discussions and some modifications to plans, one final design was decided upon and presented to Mrs. Jennings. Mrs. Jennings was thrilled with the design and the detail of the plan. She was most impressed with the fact that the Puzzle Posse took into consideration the varied ages that would be working in the garden. The lower division students should be looking forward to the opening of their new garden after the winter break. Holiday SpiritThe four kindergarten classes spread holiday cheer throughout Winston Park Tuesday morning. Under Ms. Diaz Leroy's guidance, the children sang a medley of holiday songs.
Our friends at Winston Park were truly touched and seeing the children made them feel like some of their distant family members were brought a little closer. The Teeny Tiny HouseMrs. Kawalec's class presented the play "The Teeny Tiny House" for Mrs. Savitsky's and Mrs. Counts' classes this week. The play is based on a Russian Jewish folk tale and teaches the lesson to appreciate what you have. All three classes enjoyed the performances immensely.
Citizen of the MonthCongratulations to our citizens of the month for November:
These students exemplify the life skills we teach and practice here at Shorecrest. Thank you, parents, for instilling these wonderful values in your children. You would be pleased to know that they are modeling what you taught them. Thank you for being partners with us in this most important endeavor.
ChessCongratulations to our Chess Club. Our students took Shorecrest to third place out of 27 schools. Great moves! Professional DevelopmentThree of our kindergarten teachers attended a meeting last week for all kindergarten teachers from the Bay Area Association of Independent Schools. This year it was held at St. Mary's. Mrs. Kawalec and Mrs. Brown are currently attending the National Association for Educators of Young Children meeting in Chicago. Curious George on StageWhen the Man in the Yellow Hat finds the monkey with no tail in Africa, he has no idea just how curious that special monkey could be! The monkey - he calls himself George - becomes close friends with the Man in the Yellow Hat. They are almost like family! George seems to always be a bit too curious and somehow gets in and out of trouble faster than, well, a mischievous little monkey in a kids' storybook written more than 60 years ago by H.A. and Margaret Rey. TheatreWorksUSA, a professional theater for young and family audiences, recently visited Shorecrest and performed a wonderful adaptation of "Curious George" to a very excited and entertained audience of Lower Division students and teachers.

The project involved the fine motor skill of spreading and the math skills of counting and pattern duplication. Of course, the children thought the best part was eating their completed "dominoes"!
The Alpha children made sugar cookies by flattening cookie dough and cutting it with holiday shaped cookie cutters. After the teachers baked the cookies, each child decorated his/her own with icing and sprinkles. Their faces showed how much they enjoyed them!
The EC students have been busy getting ready for their annual holiday visits to our neighbors at the Winston Park Condominiums. They have been practicing their songs with Mrs. McIvor and the other teachers at every opportunity. As a special treat for our audience there, the children also made cards which they will individually hand to the residents at the end of the program. To make the cards, the Junior Kindergarten children used an unusual technique where marbleized paper is created using shaving cream and liquid water color paint. Alpha used a different paint technique to create their own unique designs.
On Saturday, December 3, the Shorecrest LEO Club participated in the annual Santa Parade, sponsored by the St. Petersburg Lions Club.

Twenty LEO Club members walked in the parade, passed out beads and candy and carried banners for the Lion's Club and the St. Pete Times. It was a beautiful morning for the parade, and a great time was had by all.
The Pathfinder Challenge and High Ropes Course Agreement to Participate Forms for the Senior Retreat will be distributed to Seniors on Monday morning meeting on December 12. Seniors who are already 18 years old may sign the forms their themselves, but seniors who aren't 18 must have the signature of a parent or guardian. In addition, please note that medical insurance information is required for all participants. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Beaton at ext. 131 or rab@shorecrest.org The Retreat "Bring-Along" list will also be distributed at Monday's meeting and will be posted in E-Bytes next week and throughout the Winter Break.
Studypalooza is an event that will take place for interested Freshmen the weekend of Dec.17-18. Students can meet with Mr. Heller from 10-12 on Saturday and from 1-3 on Sunday. All participants will come to H4 "armed" with at least three questions so that we can discuss them as a group. If you are interested, please e-mail rheller@shorecrest.org.
The high school Key Club volunteered at the Big Brother's, Big Sister's Christmas skating party last Sunday on December 4, 2005. The club members met at Rainbow Roller Land and played and skated with all the kids.

At the end, Santa stopped by, and Patrick M., Pavandeep B., and Taylor T. helped him give out presents to the very happy children. Carley S. exclaimed, "The kids we played with were so sweet, and the party was a blast!" More pictures.
Three members of Shorecrest's Upper Division attended the NAIS's 18th People of Color Conference/12th Student Diversity Leadership Conference held in Dallas, from December 1 through December 3. Junior Sonya N., sophomore Crishana W., and Diversity Club sponsor Richard Beaton spent three very full days in workshops and affinity groups with the goal of developing effective ways to promote an appreciation of diversity in our community.

The two conferences occurred simultaneously, with some events in common. These latter included an amazing opening address by James Earl Jones who developed his remarks around the theme that "everything that happens to a people is its culture"; a breakfast at which Hispanic author Sandra Cisneros was the featured speaker; and a closing encounter session at which the Florida students shared the ideas they had developed with the Florida teachers.
Each day's activities began before sunrise and finished late in the evening. It was a very powerful experience. We gained a richer appreciation of what diversity means and examined a variety of methods to foster and support it at Shorecrest. We look forward to implementing some of our ideas as the next months unfold.
Tom Glaister led the Shorecrest bands in a delightful winter concert for both the student population and again in the evening for our families.

Starting with the youngest students, the fourth grade Beginning Band performed three pieces, followed by the Intermediate Band and then Shorecrest Concert Band. A favorite was "Red Clay," performed by the talented All That Jazz Band.

The 24-member Intermediate Band was outstanding. They played "Nobel Procession" by Eric Osterling and a wonderful, rousing piece by Larry Clark called "Confidence." This is not only one of the largest and most talented Intermediate Bands we have had at Shorecrest.
And finally a fitting closure to the evening was "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" with all members fourth through twelfth grade united on stage. Bravo to each member!
A letter from Mike Murphy was mailed to all families regarding attendance at one of Mrs. Susan Stone's Listening Sessions. Mrs Stone has been hired by the Board of Trustees to work with our community to develop our plan for the next decade. An essential element of the planning process is hearing from parents about the significant strategic issues facing our school.
Mrs. Stone will conduct ten Listening Sessions for parents on January 10, 11, and 12.
Please look at the following times and select one that suits your schedule. Then, RSVP to Karen Bruggeman at 522-2111, ext.111. All the sessions will be conducted in the Student Activities Center at Shorecrest.
These sessions will be for parents only. The Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and students will have their own sessions. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mike Murphy at 522-2111, ext.102.

Parent participation is at 77.5%. But how many more commitments are required to reach the 80% mark? We are registering Shorecrest family commitments to the Annual Fund by "student-units" to make sure that when a family with multiple students makes their Annual Fund commitment, each of their student's grade levels will receive credit. We have approximately 980 "student-units." It will take just 25 more "student-units" to reach the 80% participation level! If you have a family with 2 students and you make your Annual Fund commitment, you've just taken care of 2 of those 25 "student-units." We're almost there and believe that by December 31 we will be at the 80% parent participation level.
If you want to see the latest breakdown on participation by grade level, click to see the Grade Level Participation for all grades. If you haven't made your Annual Fund commitment yet and want to know you will be in good company, click to see the Complete Donor List of Annual Fund donors for this year.
Now more than ever we need every family's support for the Annual Fund. Click to go to the on-line pledge form. The pledge you make need only be fulfilled by May 1, 2006, but we need to know of your support today!
Thank you again to all of you who have given so faithfully and so well to make this year's Annual Fund a terrific success.
In Mr. Heller's Western Civilization class, the ninth grade students study the period of Roman history when Cicero, that great orator, exposes the treachery of the evil Cataline and presents to the Senate scathing orations that resound to this day. In Mrs. Robison's Latin classes the Upper Division students are treated to Cicero's words in the original.
In the eighth grade Latin IB class, Mrs. Grau's students are given a glimpse of the Roman Republic. Why not get together for lunch? This is exactly what happened on December 2, when Mrs. Robison and Mr. Heller were the guests of the Latin IB class at a pizza lunch. They "sang for their supper" by presenting some readings on Cicero and Cataline. The eighth grade class responded with a song, "Oh You Traitor, Cataline." Treachery, when tempered with pizza, can be quite enjoyable.
