Parent / Toddler Classes

Expanding upon what was known as Mommy and Me classes in years past, our Parent-Toddler classes in St. Petersburg, Florida, include parents, grandparents, friends, family members and caregivers along with the little tots they love! Learn and grow together, while bonding and socializing in a safe, nurturing environment.

Current classes include:

Wonder Studio

Wonder Studio is for our youngest learners.
This is a place where toddlers learn the difference between how flour and shaving cream feel between tiny fingers and toes.
A place where squeezing an entire bottle of glue onto paper is not only OK with the teacher... it is strongly encouraged!
A studio environment instead of a classroom indicates that this is a place that can get messy… there are no recipes to follow, no goals to be met. Being creative means inventing NEW ideas, not simply repeating what others have done in the past.
Sure, they'll get sticky and wet - and they'll also giggle and grow!
This is what child-led learning looks like!

The Wonder Studio offers experiences that are multi-sensory, “messy”, and open-ended. Children ages 18 mos. and up participate in a broad range of developmentally appropriate experiences along side a loving parent or caregiver who is dedicated to joining his/her child in discovery and exploration. Each class includes a circle time with stories, songs, and puppetry. Children have repeated scientific opportunities to strengthen their disposition for curiosity, creativity and co-learning. Adults gain an understanding of non-traditional approaches to chemistry, physics, biology and ecology for the youngest children. Children also discover the joys of working with one another through full-bodied arts investigations. Caregivers develop an understanding for using the arts as a tool for thinking in guiding their young child’s development.

These classes are inspired by the pre-schools of Reggio-Emilia, Italy, and the studio incorporates philosophies from Waldorf, Bev Bos, and Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. Learning experiences are documented and reflected upon on the Wonder Studio blog: http://thewonderstudio.blogspot.com

Cost: $300 for 12-week session (All materials and supplies provided). 2 days of Wonder Studio classes/wk = $600.

(In addition to the schedule below, Wonder Studio offers ocassional Saturday classes and Open Studio Thursday classes. Please contact Shannon for more information.)

Most classes are full, and continue to fill VERY quickly! Please email tot.wonder.arts@gmail.com to register.

Music & Me

Music & Me provides family music classes for children from birth to age five and their adult caregivers. We use segments of song, movement, instruments and rhythm exercises in a playful, non-performance setting. Classes are 45-minutes long and run in 10-week terms three times during the school year with two 5-week summer sessions.

Each term concentrates on a different collection of music gathered from our own culture and cultures around the world, as well as some originally composed music. We use all the modalities and introduce complex rhythms ensuring children are exposed to both traditional and non-traditional harmonies and structures. Families take home songbooks and CDs of the collections we study to continue learning and listening at home, reinforcing what is taught in the classroom each week.

The "Music Together" program we use is based on over 20 years of early childhood music education research. That research has shown children who participate in music learning at this key age develop not only musical competence, but benefit in greater language, cognitive, motor, social and emotional development as well! Our research is ongoing, ensuring our techniques for learning remain cutting edge and best utilize the most current information available in this field.

My Smart Hands

Start communicating with your baby before he/she can speak, and enhance bonding through time spent teaching signs!

My Smart Hands offers family sign language classes for parents/caregivers and their babies/toddlers. Baby sign language is a tool of communication that you can use with your preverbal baby. It has been proven to reduce frustrations, accelerate verbal development and strengthen cognitive skills. Research shows infants can communicate through the use of sign language long before they can verbalize their needs. Due to brain development, babies learn to gesture at a fairly early age, giving them the ability to sign back to you.

At My Smart Hands with Maria, I will give you the tools and resources you need to help you bridge that communication gap between you and your child. In a playful, educational and language-rich environment, caregivers and children will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games, and songs. In a fun and friendly atmosphere, we explore American Sign Language with songs and stories.

You will learn recommended first signs, discuss the benefits of using ASL with infants, and demonstrate easy techniques for successfully integrating signs into everyday life. Some of the ASL vocabulary covered for this age group includes everyday words, family, food, animals, emotions, opposites, bed time, and play signs.

Cost:  $175 for 8-week session. Includes a colorful manual and CD.

About Maria Gagnon

Sign language is my passion! While completing my undergraduate degree in Journalism and Media Studies at the University of South Florida, ASL fulfilled my foreign language requirement. It was during that time that I fell in love with the language, deaf culture, and community.

Communication is such an important gift in life and shouldn’t be taken for granted. Teaching your child baby sign language is an awesome way to bond with them, and hopefully will help alleviate some of the stresses of the language barrier that comes with parenting. My first baby is due in October, and I want to share my knowledge, experience and passion for sign language with as many families as I can.
