Faculty – David Hyink
David Hyink has been at Shorecrest for 27 years and has been the
Chair of the Science Department in the Upper Division for the past
10 years. He has a B.S. in Education, specializing in Chemistry
and Biology from the University of Florida and a M.A. in Biology
Education from USF. Mr. Hyink is state certified for teaching Biology
and Chemistry.
*Mr. Hyink was awarded “Outstanding Biology Teacher in Florida” in
2002 by the National Association of Biology Teachers.
*As Chairman of the Science Department, Mr. Hyink planned and
designed the science classrooms/labs and implemented the change
in science sequence to the “Physics First” curriculum
in the Upper School. As an advocate for the “Physics First” curriculum,
Mr. Hyink made a presentation at the Florida Association of Science
Teachers convention on how to implement this change in the science
sequence.
*Served on evaluation / accreditation committees for FCIS (Florida
Council of Independent Schools) for several schools including Tampa
Prep, Bradenton Christian and Palmer Trinity in Miami.
*Served on a state committee to align Florida science standards
with public school science curriculum
*Worked on a committee for Glencoe/McGraw Hill Publishing Company
revising and editing science textbooks.
*Served as a judge for the national Toshiba Exploravision contest
in Arlington, Virginia for three years.
*Invited by the College Board of Educational Testing Service to
be an AP Biology exam reader/grader for the past 10 years. For
the past six years, Mr. Hyink also served as a Table Leader, writing
the standards by which other readers grade the essays.
During Mr. Hyink’s tenure at Shorecrest, he has taught a
variety of science courses including life science, physical science,
conceptual physics, chemistry, biology and AP biology. He also
sponsors the Science Club.
