Michael McCarthy,
Musical Theatre Director and MD Music
Mr. McCarthy is a world-class singer who played Inspector Javart in the Broadway production of Les Miserables as well as in London’s West End among many other locations. He also performed Les Miserables in Shanghai and as a result of its success, western shows are now being produced in Mandarin in China.
Mr. McCarthy has also performed in concerts as a featured soloist with orchestras around the globe and in the presence of Queen Elisabeth, former Prime Minister Tony Blair and former French President Jacques Chirac. He performed with Audra McDonald and the BBC Concert Orchestra for BBC Radio’s Friday Night is Music Night. He has also performed for a variety of charity concerts.
A successful recording artist as well, he also sang the title role of “Dracula” in a new musical recording, which has been well received by critics and the public. Mr. McCarthy has two of his own CDs, “Broadway” and “Living for the Moment.”
He hails from Cork, Ireland and began his professional career at the age of 15 performing lead roles at the Cork Opera House. He graduated with a diploma in drama from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. He also has a BFA from Stephen's College in theatre and music.
Mr. McCarthy instructed at Shorecrest this summer with Mr. Leavengood's Pro Theatre Prep program and says, "The kids I met during the summer made me want to be here. They were a credit to the school." He will be teaching Middle Division music as well as directing the spring musical.
