Although every student will create a list of colleges that is designed specifically
for their interests and needs, the application process is similar for most
colleges and universities. In addition to the requirements, deadlines,
and procedures required by colleges, Shorecrest has a system for completing
and sending applications. Please read this section carefully.

General Information
You will be asked to provide your full name, your
birth date, and your social security number. If you prefer, you
may omit your social security number.
Often colleges will request that you give your parents
full name, profession, education history including degrees earned
and at what level. It is important to have this information at
hand when you begin to complete application forms.
Another piece of information that is often requested
is your test history. Dates (month and year) and scores for SAT
Reasoning and SAT Subject test as well as ACT composite and sub
scores are important information to know before you begin to prepare
your application. If you are uncertain of your scores, the easiest
place to retrieve your scores is at the registration site for either
SAT or ACT. You will need your access code.
Applications require your signature in several places.
You will sign your application at the completion of the form. It
important to note that on many applications your signature affirms
that all information that you provide is correct and all essays
you submit are your original work.
Early
Decision/Early Action
Early Decision: Students who have
a sound academic record and solid test scores and have identified
one college or university as their first and often only choice
may choose to apply to that one school. Applications for Early
Decision are most often due November 1st or November 15th. It is
prudent to check all deadline dates. If a student is accepted in
the Early Decision process, the student is obligated to attend
that school and must withdraw all other application. Early Decision
Applications require the student and often a parent to sign a statement
that assures that all parties understand the terms of Early Decision.
Early Action: The reasons to select
Early Action are very much like those for Early Decision, a sense
of commitment to the college. The deadlines are the same as Early
Decision, November 1st or November 15th, depending on the college.
Students accepted in Early Action have the option to submit additional
applications and to wait until May 1st to notify the college if
they will attend. Applications may require a signature to be considered
for Early Action.
Single Choice, Early Action: This
option is a recent addition to the list. Selective colleges have
adopted this option. Single Choice Early Action has the same feature
as Early Action; students may wait until spring to decide whether
they will accept admission. The major difference is that, just
as with Early Decision, a student may apply to only one SCEA school.
Always go over the application form carefully to
be certain that you sign the proper spaces and check the correct
boxes so that the admissions committee is aware of your intentions.
Application
Processing
Students send applications on-line or by mail (registered
mail, or FedX). On-line applications require the same information
and the same careful attention to detail as one that is completed
on paper. Many college strongly suggest that student use the on-line
option, but currently, the way you complete and send your application
is your choice.
Shorecrest is responsible for sending many parts
of your application: your transcript, the school Profile, the secondary
school report, counselor recommendation, and teacher recommendations.
If you apply on-line all of the above materials will be mailed
in a single envelope to meet the deadline required. You may also
include additional materials that you could not add to an on-line
application.
If you submit a paper application Shorecrest will
mail all pieces of the application in a single envelope. It is
the student’s responsibility to have all materials complete
and ready to include with the materials that the school will send.
Sending a complete and comprehensive application
to each college is the first and most important goal in this process.
Meeting the deadlines set by each college is equally important.
It is the ultimate responsibility of the student to complete an
application by the required deadline.
Application
Options
Students have many options available to complete
applications. Colleges and universities provide paper applications
upon request. These same applications can be downloaded from the
college website. Colleges also give a student the opportunity to
apply directly on-line and send their applications electronically.
Students may elect to use the Common Application, a form that more
that 255 colleges accept.
The Common Application is
available in paper form in the College Center or on-line. If you
use the Common Application, you may also be required to submit
a supplement. Supplements are easily accessed by links from the
Common Application website.
On-line applications may be accessed from the colleges’ websites.
A quick way to reach college websites is the link, All
About College or University
of Texas: Education. Both of these links will take you directly
to any college/university. In addition to these sources, you may
also use services where you can fill out key information only once
while completing numerous applications. See Princeton
Review and College Board.
