Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shorecrest accredited?
Shorecrest holds accreditation from the Southern Association of
College and Schools, the Florida Council of Independent Schools,
the Florida Kindergarten Council, and the National Academy of Early
Childhood Programs. The school also holds membership in the National
Association of Independent Schools, the Southern Association of Independent
Schools, the Bay Area Association of Independent Schools, the College
Board, Cum Laude Society, the Secondary School Admission Test Board,
the Educational Records Bureau, the Florida High School Activities
Association, and the School and Student Service for Financial Aid.
What colleges do Shorecrest graduates attend?
Shorecrest has a full-time Director of College
Counseling, providing an individualized college counseling program,
and 100% of our graduates are accepted to college. Click to see
our recent college/university
list.
What is the student-teacher ratio at Shorecrest?
Our student-teacher ratio is 12:1. Early Childhood and Kindergarten
classes have a teacher and assistant teacher in each class. Although
most other classes have between 15 and 18 students, many upper level
advanced classes are taught to significantly smaller groups, providing
great individual attention.
How are gifted students challenged in class?
The everyday curriculum at Shorecrest is taught at the gifted level.
Classroom lessons are enriched with many hands-on experiential activities,
designed to stimulate critical thinking skills and intellectual growth.
In addition, Middle and Upper Division students have opportunities
to enroll in Honors level and Advanced Placement classes for an accelerated
curriculum.
Is there extra help for those students who require it?
Occasionally a student might need extra help. We offer tutoring
through our Academic Services program, available during and after
school, as well as during the summer.
On what is the admission decision based?
Admission decisions are based upon a student’s previous school
record, teacher recommendations, observations from their classroom
visit to Shorecrest, a personal interview and, for students in grades
3 and higher, results of an admissions test. We look at the whole
child, evaluting a student’s readiness and ability to succeed
academically in our challenging curriculum, and determining if Shorecrest
is a good fit for that student.
What extra-curricular activities are available for my child?
Shorecrest offers a wide range of extra-curricular
activities, from sports to theatre to service clubs, and more.
Are there opportunities for parents to volunteer?
Volunteers are a vital part of the educational
excellence we provide our students, and we have an active Parent
Association. Whether you volunteer to help in a classroom or the
library, be a room parent, chaperone a field trip, become involved
in our arts or music program, sell food at an athletic event, help
with the holiday gift drive, or Teacher Appreciation Day, or become
a Parent Ambassador for a new family, we heartily welcome your involvement!
Are students required to wear uniforms?
Our students in preschool through grade 8 wear uniforms. Our high
school students adhere to a school-appropriate dress code.
Do you have a school nurse?
