Mayor's Youth Showcase of Achievement 2015
by Raffi Darrow, Ebytes Editor
Chargers found friends on stage and in the audience of the 5th annual Mayor's Youth Showcase of Achievement at the Mahaffey Theater this week. The for-teens-by-teens showcase produced by TASCO highlights what is great about today's teens, and includes awards and performances by locals. Eight middle schoolers and eight high schoolers were recognized for achievement, talent, excellence, and community contributions in eight categories.
Nominations for the showcase of achievement were open to all middle and high school students in Pinellas. Nine Shorecrest students from Middle School and Upper School were nominated in various categories.
Congratulations to those recognized: Winner senior Jared W and Finalist senior Matthew J (literary arts), Winner & Finalist eighth grader Walker W (science/technology, citizenship/leadership), and Winner seventh grader Shannon W (performing arts). Winners received an iPad mini and savings account.
In addition, seventh grader Shannon W performed her junior thespians musical number "Don't Rain on My Parade" during the show and took part in the finale, and Jami-Lyn Fehr '14, last year's performing arts winner, introduced the Performing Arts category.
Thank you to all of the teachers who took the time to nominate an outstanding Charger this year!
