Parent / Toddler Classes

Expanding upon what was known as Mommy and Me classes in years past, our Parent-Toddler classes in St. Petersburg, Florida, include parents, grandparents, friends, family members and caregivers along with the little tots they love! Learn and grow together, while bonding and socializing in a safe, nurturing environment.

Current classes include:

Wonder Studio

Wonder Studio is for our youngest learners.
This is a place where toddlers learn the difference between how flour and shaving cream feel between tiny fingers and toes.
A place where squeezing an entire bottle of glue onto paper is not only OK with the teacher... it is strongly encouraged!
A studio environment instead of a classroom indicates that this is a place that can get messy… there are no recipes to follow, no goals to be met. Being creative means inventing NEW ideas, not simply repeating what others have done in the past.
Sure, they'll get sticky and wet - and they'll also giggle and grow!
This is what child-led learning looks like!

The Wonder Studio is an Arts and Science Studio for young people and their caregivers that offers multi-sensory, messy and open-ended experiences. Children ages 18 months and up participate in a broad range of developmentally appropriate experiences along side a loving parent or caregiver who is dedicated to joining his/her child in discovery and exploration. Each class includes circle time with stories, songs and puppetry. Children have repeated scientific opportunities to strengthen their disposition for curiosity, creativity and co-learning. Adults gain an understanding of non-traditional approaches to chemistry, physics, biology and ecology for the youngest children. Children also discover the joys of working with one another through full-bodied arts investigations. Caregivers develop an understanding for using the arts as a tool for thinking in guiding their young child’s development.

These classes are inspired by the pre-schools of Reggio-Emilia, Italy, and the studio incorporates philosophies from Waldorf, Bev Bos and Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. Learning experiences are documented and reflected upon on the Wonder Studio blog: http://thewonderstudio.blogspot.com

Cost: $330 for 12-week session (All materials and supplies provided). 2 days of Wonder Studio classes/wk = $660.

(In addition to the schedule below, Wonder Studio offers ocassional Saturday classes. Please contact Shannon for more information.)

Music & Me

Music & Me provides family music classes for children from birth to age five and their adult caregivers. We use segments of play-based music classes supporting development and strengthening bonds in a playful, non-performance setting. Classes are 45-minutes long and run in 10-week terms three times during the school year with two 5-week summer sessions.

Each term concentrates on a different collection of music gathered from our own culture and cultures around the world, as well as some originally composed music. We use all the modalities and introduce complex rhythms ensuring children are exposed to both traditional and non-traditional harmonies and structures. Families take home songbooks and CDs of the collections we study to continue learning and listening at home, reinforcing what is taught in the classroom each week.

The "Music Together" program we use is based on over 20 years of early childhood music education research. That research has shown children who participate in music learning at this key age develop not only musical competence, but benefit in greater language, cognitive, motor, social and emotional development as well! Our research is ongoing, ensuring our techniques for learning remain cutting edge and best utilize the most current information available in this field.
