First Grade Reading and Writing Workshop in an Independent School Classroom: An authentic approach to teaching literacy

Sarah, along with guest experts, will provide teachers with the necessary building blocks to implement a successful and authentic reading workshop routine in independent school classrooms. Through this comprehensive three-day seminar, participants will learn how to enhance their first grade students’ reading experience and accelerate their progress. Seminar sessions will focus on planning dynamic reading and writing units, conferring with first grade readers and writers, planning interactive read alouds, writing effective mini-lessons and much more!

Earn 18 hours toward recertification.

Minimum Participants: 8; Maximum Participants: 25
Cost: $250 (Includes binders with session content, children’s books to use for instruction, coffee, light breakfast and snacks.)

Your Instructor

Sarah Finnemore Palazzolo is the Lower School Curriculum Dean at Shorecrest Preparatory School and a literacy consultant with expertise in reading and writing workshops and literacy curriculum development. She has taught third through fifth grades. Her experience as an independent school teacher, her training in reading and writing workshop from Columbia University, and Sarah’s position as lead staff developer and literacy coach with Pinellas County Schools allows her to offer specialized and practical professional development in literacy.

She is an avid reader and writer; and enjoys discovering new cultural opportunities - especially food - around St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida, where she lives with her husband and daughters.
