Tennis Season Starts Out

by Coach Bob Davis
The first week of matches for the varsity and junior varsity tennis Chargers began on February 11, with a home varsity match against Canterbury. The Chargers boys and girls swept Canterbury in all positions except for the number 1 girls varsity match with Wynn Bryant '20 dropping a hard contested match 4-8 to her opponent.

On Tuesday, the varsity teams faced Berkeley Prep and lost all singles and doubles.

On Thursday, the varsity teams again lost to SSES with a sole win at the number 7 girls spot with Mya Plotkin '22 winning a battle against her opponent in a 7 point tie break.

The junior varsity teams had a similar difficult outing against Berkeley with the boys losing 0-7 and the girls, a bit more competitive but losing 2-5. The two victories came in number one singles with Adyson J, and number 1 doubles with Adyson J and Victoria D.

Coach Davis said these were great, competitive experiences for all of our players as they learn to deal with the pressure of match play. "I hope many of the JV players will realize that to play at a high level one has to make a commitment to working hard year round. That will make our teams much more competitive across the board." he added. The top four players on the boys varsity team have been training and playing USTA tournaments year round. Several of the varsity girls have done so as well.

Next week the varsity teams will face Out of Door Academy, away. JV plays on the 25th against St. Martha Middle School in Sarasota.
