MLK Day of Service in Lower School
by Christine Oman, First Grade Teacher
In honor of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Experiential and Lower School students have been finding ways to be of service to one another. These acts, big and small, bring our community of learners together.
Mrs. Oman’s first grade class showed Mrs. Craver’s JK class how to use watercolor pencils. First, they practiced on their own so that they would be confident in teaching their younger friends how to use this art media. When the time came for grades to meet, students were put in partners and the first graders guided the JK students in how to color a picture with the pencils, and then how to use paintbrushes to create a blended effect. Afterwards, the first graders read books to the younger students, feeling very confident with their reading skills.
Ms. Horne’s second graders showed the first graders how to use Book Creator, an app used to create ebooks on iPad devices, Chromebooks and on the web. Now the stories first graders have written can be printed as books! Second graders beamed with pride to help another class accomplish that goal.
