Chargers Varsity Tennis at District Tournament, Day 1

by Coach Bob Davis
The first day of the District tennis tournament was Monday at Payne Park in downtown Sarasota, Florida. The top 5 players for each team - girls and boys - competed for the right to advance to Regional competition next week. The top two teams from Districts advance to Regionals. Also, the top singles player - a boy and a girl - will advance to the State Championships in two weeks.
The girls and boys teams advanced further as teams than they have in the past 3 years with the number 2 Kirsten Price '21, number 3 Sofia Marston '21, and number 4 Emily Forney '22 advancing to the semi final singles rounds. Kiera H '24 at the 5 advanced to the final round Tuesday. Both doubles teams also advanced to the semi final rounds tomorrow with the number 1 team of Wynn Bryant '20 and Emily playing Saint Stephens; and the number 2 team of Kirsten and Sofia facing Cardinal Mooney.
Similarly, the Boys are in the finals at the number 1 flight with Matthew Danielson '20 defeating ODA in the semifinal round, at the number 2 flight with Stefan B '23 defeating ODA and at the number 4 flight, Kyle Levine '20, defeating ODA. Both doubles teams advanced to the semi final rounds tomorrow. The number one team of Matthew and Stefan defeated Bradenton Christian and the number 2 team of Tyler Del Zoppo '21 and Kyle defeated St. Pete Catholic.
Both girls and boys teams are beginning to understand that in order to compete at a high level which is what Florida Tennis demands, one must train and play year round and compete in USTA tournaments. This year there are several players on the girls and boys teams that have done exactly that, trained year round and competed in USTA tournaments and that hard work is paying off.
