Chargers Tennis Districts: Boys Runner Up

by Coach Bob Davis
The Shorecrest Chargers Boys Tennis team was electric at the District championships as they gained a berth in the Regional competition, the final road to the State championships! The boys and girls teams have much to be proud of for their performance at Districts. While the girls fell short of getting a team berth, they advanced farther than the team has in recent memory, with both girls doubles teams and four out of five singles players advancing to the semi-final rounds. While the doubles teams lost in the semi finals, Shorecrest emerged with a win at the number 5 singles flight with Keira H. '24 beating her Saint Stephens opponent in a hard fought third set tie break.

On the boys side of the ledger, the regional birth involved a nail biter doubles battle between the number 1 team of Matthew Danielson '20 and Stefan B '23 against ODA. At the end of team play Monday, the Chargers were behind ODA by one point for the runner up position. So the Chargers had to gain at least one point Tuesday to tie and force a playoff or two points to win. Also, ODA had to lose at the doubles matches at both the one and two.

The Chargers collected two points by a singles win at the number one position in the semi finals and a doubles win at the number one doubles position. And ODA lost both doubles matches - so the final team score was Shorecrest 11 and ODA 10. Matthew D battled his opponent from Saint Stephens in the championship match, but lost in a tough tie-breaker.

Coaches Davis and Del Zoppo were thrilled with the teams' performances! "Their play is the result of the system we have in place for developing our teams. The hard work that many of the players are putting in is beginning to pay off. In my four years as the Head Coach of the Tennis Program, this is the first time that both teams have advanced this far in district play and the second time that the boys have advanced to regional play." Coach Bob Davis said.
