Eighth Grade Capstone Projects [Photos]

by Kathryn Jeakle, MS Marine Science Teacher
Each year, eighth graders are challenged to find something they are passionate about, a talent they want to develop, or something to take on as an independent project. These are known as the Eighth Grade Capstone Projects. This year, students were tasked with making a community connection as part of their project. These semester-long projects were revealed on campus in a showcase on May 2.

Some examples of 2019 Eighth Grade Capstone Projects:

Allie K. took her artistic skills to a senior citizen home and painted geometric artwork.  She was able to obtain donations for all of her materials and had an extremely positive impact at the senior citizen home. Her impact was so great that one of the participants actually came to Shorecrest to help Allie present at the Showcase!

Ainsley B. took a scuba diving course and received the her diving certificate. She then wrote a children's book, “I Sea Love is Forever,” dedicated to her grandfather who was memorialized with an eternal reef ball in the Gulf of Mexico.

Victoria D. created a Garden to Remember. Her garden is very memorable because it was created for a woman with dementia. The only requirement was to have colorful flowers, and Victoria delivered. The garden is really beautiful! It has given hope and happiness to the woman who has recently fallen ill.

Nicolas M. participated in several Ghost Trap Rodeos throughout the Tampa Bay area.  He traveled in boats to find and remove derelict crab traps. The six rodeos he participated in collected a total of 19,000 pounds of material that should not be in the Tampa Bay estuary. Nicolas' participation in these rodeos has made a considerable differences in the quality of our local coastal waters.
