Seventh Grade Shares Health Information

by Christine Idinge, Seventh Grade Math Teacher
On Wednesday, May 8, a group of seventh grade students spent their afternoon interacting with the senior residents of the Sunshine Center in what was the culminating activity of a month-long study of disease and illness focused on prevention or awareness.
  • Kaja D. and Sonoma K. explained how Alzheimer's affects the brain and asked the seniors if they wanted to sign up for a Shorecrest student pen-pal, while Adelaide O. and Keira H. provided games and books that could help slow the progress of the disease.
  • Avery R. and Nate E. created an interactive game with questions about Hepatitis A.
  • Alanis J. and Jenna H. provided a smoothie beverage as part of their project on Diabetes.
  • Natalie C. and Sydney D. reminded the seniors of the ways in which they could be heart healthy including providing green tea.
  • Sofi R. had the seniors try on glasses coated with nail polish that allowed the residents to experience looking through the eyes of a person suffering from cataracts.
The students had ten minutes after all presentations to spend time with the older generation and to learn about their history and personal stories. Many of the students were grateful to have had the experience and hope the Sunshine/Shorecrest connection continues next year.
