US Robotics Finds Success at Vex Robotics Competition
by Richard Rho, Robotics Advisor
This past weekend, the Upper School Shorecrest Robotics team (Team Chargers) participated in a regional VEX Robotics Competition at River Ridge High School.
At their last competition, the students realized new opportunities to make their robots more effective and efficient. Some of these improvements included an autonomous program in which the robot would collect game piece blocks and score points, a new conveyor belt system to help collect blocks more efficiently, and a more powerfully geared gear box to help stack blocks. Students spent time after school and during Community Time over the last few weeks to work on the robot and the programming.
The team did really well during competition and scored 4-0-1. Throughout the competition they worked to strategize with their alliance partners, which helped them be successful in their matches.
After the competition, the team decided to split into 2 sub teams - one to work on improving some of the parts of the current robot, and another team to experiment with completely new designs to see how they could improve their robot for the next match.
The final competition is on January 25, where Team Chargers hope to qualify for States!
Participation in robotics offers students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities in the STEM fields. Students learn valuable skills, especially in the area of technological problem solving. Beyond science and engineering principles, VEX Robotics competitions encourages teamwork, leadership and creative thinking among groups.
