JK Students Study Collage art at Morean Art Center
by Jill Gallego and Brenda Rosas, JK Teachers
On Thursday, Jr. Kindergarten students in The Experiential School of Tampa Bay shared a field experience at the Morean Art Center in downtown St. Petersburg. There they met Shorecrest alumna and artist, Beth Reynolds ‘84. She is also the sister in law of JK teacher Mrs. Reynolds.
Ms. Reynolds shared one of her own passions, portrait photography, along with the collage-style art of Chinese-American artist Kirk Ke Wang. Wang’s current exhibition of interactive sculptures was made from personal materials donated by immigrants.
The young Chargers were invited to take a walk around the museum and point out their favorite pieces along the way. The children were especially intrigued by a hanging collage lantern. "It has 100 lights inside," said James.
After discussing their favorite works, they released their inner artists and created collages of their own using crayons, markers, glue, tissue paper, and string. It was clear the children genuinely enjoyed creating art in a museum!
In the photos [here] you’ll find Leela S. thoughtfully discussing her interpretation of a large scale canvas with Morean Art center facilitator Ms. Thompson, JK Students admiring 3D hanging art collage sculptures and students working on their own inspiring collages.
