Shorecrest Chargers Varsity Boys Tennis

by Coach Davis and Coach Del Zoppo
The second week of the tennis season saw the varsity teams play against tough teams from Bradenton Christian School (BCS) in Bradenton, and Jesuit High School (JHS boys) and the Academy of Holy Names (AHN girls) from Tampa, Florida. The BCS match was hosted at our home facility, the St. Pete Tennis Center, and the JHS/AHN match was hosted at the Hillsborough community college courts in Tampa.

The boys match was a nail-biter that came down to a number 2 doubles tie break to decide the match outcome at 4-3 for the Chargers. Going into the singles competition Kyle Levine '20 at the number 1 line lost a tough match 1-8, Sasa B '25 at the number 2 lost 3-8. Then Jake Wilsey '20 at 3 won a battle 9-8 in a tie break. Sam Herhily '21 won handily at 8-1 and Lliam C '20 won 8-1 to give the Chargers a 3-2 lead going into doubles play.

The 1 doubles team of Kyle Levine '20 and Sasa B '25 lost 3-8 to BCS to tie the match and it came down to the number 2 doubles of Lliam Cobb '20 and Sam Herhily '21 to pull out a back and forth match that ended in a 9-8 tie break under the lights.

In Tampa against JHS, the Chargers boys lost a very close match 4-3 that came down to the number 2 doubles team again but this time, it was Tyler Del Zoppo '21 and George R. '25. The singles lineup was led by Matthew Danielson '20 who beat his opponent in a tough battle 7-6, 6-2. At the 2 line, Stefan Bilanovic '23 dropped a tough match 4-6, 2-6 and at the 3 line Tyler Del Zoppo '21 lost 0-6, 1-6. George R '25 at the 4 won 6-3, 6-1 and Kyle Levine '20 pulled out a win in a third set tie break 6-3, 1-6, 10-7!

Going into doubles play, the Chargers were ahead by 1 point 3-2. JHS then swept both doubles lines at 6-0, 6-1 at the 1 Matthew Danielson '20 and Stefan Bilanovic '23 and 6-4, 6-3 at the 2 Tyler Del Zoppo '21 and George R '25. Despite the close loss to JHS, the competitive level of the matches were all very high and we learned a few things as well.
