Learning the Lindy Hop
by Rachel Ekblad, Upper School English Teacher
Shorecrest Upper School students in Ms. Ekblad's Studies in Culture class studyed the Lindy Hop vs. hip hop, looking at correspondences between the music, dance styles, and social role of these two art forms within their cultural contexts. In particular, students discussed songwriting and dance as methods of resistance to oppression within Black communities throughout the 20th century.
Ms. Ekblad invited a guest dance instructor from the local Lindy Hop scene to help teach students a jazz dance routine to Jimmie Lunceford's "T'aint What You Do," which they then also danced to a hip hop song so they could see how seamlessly specific moves translated between the two genres.
