Sailing at SAISA District Team Race Championship
by Heidi Hicks ‘21
The Shorecrest Sailing Chargers travelled to Miami to compete in the SAISA District Team Race Championship and National Qualifier. The two-day event showed a broad range of sailing conditions from no wind to a steady 12 knot seabreeze towards the end of each day. Out of the 6 teams from the South Atlantic district that attended, Shorecrest finished 5th.
"This was not the result that we anticipated going into the event, but we were impressed to see that the level of team racing in our district is very strong, and the team looks forward to learning more about the discipline of team racing as we prepare for college sailing," said Heidi Hicks '21.
The difference between team racing and fleet racing disciplines is very different. Instead of sailing against every team at once with one representative pair from each team to a boat, two schools compete 3 vs 3 in an attempt to finish with the least cumulative points as possible amongst their teammates. For example, if Shorecrest is sailing against another school, the three Shorecrest boats use fleet race tactics and the rules of sailing to their advantage to make sure they finish with a winning combo that totals less than 11 points. There are many plays and combinations that can be executed to secure a victory over the other team.
Next up, the team will be at SAISA Fleet Race Districts with the hope of qualifying for their first Nationals appearance since 2016.
