In the Running for an Ocean Guardian School Distinction

by Kathryn Jeakle, Eighth Grade Marine Science Teacher
Ms. Jeakle and Ms. Parrott applied through NOAA for Shorecrest to earn an Ocean Guardian School Distinction. To be recognized as an Ocean Guardian School, Chargers must demonstrate how they can protect the Tampa Bay Watershed. Goals for this year were:
  • to minimize as much waste as possible on campus.
  • to clean up waste on campus and at the canal, preventing it from getting out to the Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
  • to improve the school’s recycling program.
Due to COVID Health and Safety Policies, students found it challenging to reduce waste at the Charger Commons dining room, but they were successful with their other two goals.

To keep our watershed & ocean clean, the Chargers had 127 days of campus and canal clean-up during science classes and community time. They conducted 2 brand audits totaling 943 pieces of trash and took part in 2 Litterati Challenges with over 1200 pieces of trash collected. The total on-campus collection of trash, in weight, this year was 186.84 lbs

To improve recycling on campus, 27 recycle bins were painted and placed in Middle School and Lower School. They also converted mixed recycling to paper-only recycling on campus to minimize contamination issues and help assure items in recycling containers are successfully recycled.

NOAA should inform them this summer if the Middle School succeeded!
