Seventh Grade Students Lead Community Time

by Alicia Montoya, Seventh Grade Math Teacher
On Friday, September 10, seventh graders led a variety of breakout sessions for their peers during Community Time. Students who were interested in leading a workshop filled out a form in advance. The presenters then planned and designed content; and their classmates chose two sessions to visit that interested them the most. This put the students in charge!

There were interest groups for things like understanding the strategy video game Clash Royale, learning about the MS football team, drawing, jewelry making, cupcake decorating and improv acting. Some students chose to use the time as Study Hall to focus on academics.

Giving students the choice and opportunity to experience new things in a low-stakes environment lives Shorecrest's Mission.

“Some students went out of their comfort zones and tried something new. Some students were able to join a group with friends and focus on a passion. Either way, the students really enjoyed having the ability to choose how they spent their time. We're so excited to see the kids take the lead and support each other!” said Alicia Montoya, seventh grade math teacher.

Excited students reported back:

"This Community Time actually felt like it was more than an hour. We were so focused on the improv class that we didn't even think about the time. It was so much fun!" said Hope K.

"I liked being able to choose things I cared about instead of someone planning something they thought I'd be interested in," shared Elli B.

"It was actually fun. You got to pick something you cared about!" said Aaron W.

On October 25 the students will lead CT again with:
  • Sofia L. - Jewelry making
  • Olivia J. - How to make money
  • Max M. - Minecraft tips and tricks
  • Aaron W. and Tyler B. - How to yoyo
  • Xavier B. - How to draw cartoons
  • Elli B. - Study skills
  • Paul S. and Leo J. - Chess Club
  • Lep F. and Charlie H. - Playing Magic The Gathering
  • Jonah D., Lucas A. and Edward S. - Tic Tac Toe Tournament
