Asking Good Questions

by Adriana Hollenbeck, Head of The Experiential School of Tampa Bay
When a student asks me a question, one of my favorite answers is another question: “What do you think?”

This question shows that I acknowledge that the child has already made connections to the topic. The question itself is an opportunity to get an insight into their thinking and build it from there. An answer often ends the conversation and we are here to go deeper to connect links and build knowledge.

Good questions are the questions that no one yet knows the answer to.

Here are some examples of great questions. Feel free to borrow some and use them at home. You may be surprised with the answers you get!
  • What do you think?
  • What should we do?
  • Is there a different way to do this?
  • What makes you think that way?
  • What else can you tell me about this?
  • Why do you believe that?
  • What’s your plan?
  • What are you working on?
  • What material are you going to use?
  • What tools do you need?
  • Could you tell me more about the connection you are making?
  • What do you think would happen if…
  • What surprised you?
