An Ethic of Excellence
by Adriana Hollenbeck, Head of The Experiential School of Tampa Bay
Over all these years working as an educator, I have had the privilege of crossing paths with amazing human beings, passionate about their craft and willing to share their research with others.
Years ago we hosted a conference at my previous school and invited Ron Berger to be our keynote speaker. A graduate of Hampshire College, Ron holds a Master of Education from Harvard University, where he teaches a course that uses exemplary student project work to illuminate academic standards.
Ron is one of those people able to challenge what we know and I feel like there is a before-and-after-Ron in my praxis. I remember Ron saying that if you are going to do something, then you should do it well. You should sweat over it and make sure it’s strong and accurate and beautiful. It should be something that you are proud of.
This works at every level, including The Experiential School. Ron calls it “An Ethic of Excellence” and he wrote a great book on the topic.
At Shorecrest we work hard to build a school with a culture that encourages our students to volunteer, to work together, and to deeply care about the quality of what they do. Once students enter a culture with a powerful ethic, that ethic is what they know and it becomes the norm.
When documenting student work at The Experiential School, teachers become historians of excellence, archivers of excellence. We are deeply proud of the work done by our students!
"One thing clear to me though is that the power of the culture rests in community."
