Happy New Year!

by Nancy L. Spencer, Head of School
With the end of the first week of the new year, looking ahead seems to be a natural outcome.

Classes are underway with new projects and topics to explore. Athletic practices, music/theater rehearsals and club meetings occupy our Chargers’ extracurricular time. We have welcomed a number of mid-year entry families who are excited to join the Shorecrest community. While COVID continues to be a challenge, our teachers and staff are working towards our goal to keep students learning in person, on campus, with as little disruption as possible.

We have had our first of three “Facing Forward” sessions, a time when families can learn about what life at Shorecrest might be like, down the road of their children’s academic journey. The faculty’s first professional development day of the year focused on the School’s self-study and working together in teams in preparation for our Accreditation. The Strategic Planning Task Force is taking shape and looking ahead towards an aspirational and inspirational vision for Shorecrest.

There is much to be optimistic about looking ahead. One of the defining aspects of this school is that there are so many people in this community who care deeply about Shorecrest. What matters most is what unites us: the success and well-being of our students, as we work to provide academic excellence with innovative programs in a supportive, diverse and inclusive community.

Looking ahead to next weekend, I invite you to join me and other members of the school community in celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our plan is to gather at the MLK Dream Big Parade on Monday, January 17, to support members of the greater St. Petersburg community as they march to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy. In recognition of Dr. King’s commitment to service, Shorecrest Chargers will participate in the clean-up efforts at the conclusion of the parade. If you would like to watch the parade together or be a part of the clean-up event, please meet at 10am at Pioneer Park at the corner of Central Avenue and Beach Drive downtown in full Shorecrest gear. For more information, please contact Mr. Roderick Fludd at rfludd@shorecrest.org. These plans are of course subject to change due to COVID-19. As of the publish time of this Ebytes article, the parade organizers intend to proceed as planned.

I hope to see you there!

All the best,
Nancy
