Student Teaching Others about Black Changemakers
At Shorecrest in February, many Lower School classes daily highlight the contributions of African Americans who may be often overlooked. Some highlight a "Person of the Day" in their Morning Meeting. The same can be said for women during March, honoring Women's History Month.
Shorecrest second grader, Mila H. ‘32, didn't just passively learn about the contributions of African Americans in our history, she took what she learned and created a teaching poster so others could learn about these Changemakers. When asked why this was important for her, Mila said, "Black people haven't always been recognized for their hard work. I want more kids to know about people who make a difference. People who look like me. But you don't have to just learn about them during Black History Month. You can learn about Changemakers all year!" Mila's family also provides her with plenty of support by maintaining active dialogue on this topic at home. They made the materials available and learned along with her, but this project was her work and her idea.
“As Mila said, it is important to learn about these influencers all year round," shared her teacher, Mrs. Oman. "And that's just what we do!”
