Prison Narratives Gallery Walk

by Natalie Updike, Upper School English Teacher
Seniors in Ms. Updike's English 12 Honors: Prison Narratives course presented a Gallery Walk on December 9, 2022, to educate the public regarding various aspects of the prison system. Throughout the semester students explored different facets of the Prison Industrial Complex, first choosing a topic of interest, identifying a problem within that topic, researching that topic to form a Proposal with possible real-world, actionable solution, and then writing a paper with a literature review as well as an analysis of their proposed solution. Additionally, students formed and designed creative or actionable projects that depicted or furthered their proposed solution. Some examples of the projects shared by Chargers were spoken word poems, paintings, sculptures, letters to legislators that were mailed, petitions, simulated videos, audio clips, architectural blueprints, prison food displays, etc.

At the completion of the Gallery Walk, visitors were asked "What did you learn?" Students, parents, faculty, and staff who attended provided responses on Post-It Notes. Within the two hours, the Gallery Walk hosted over 120 guests from on and off Shorecrest's campus.
