by Jennifer Marquis, Arts Producer
The Straz Center’s Broadway Star of the Future Awards program focuses much-needed attention on the meaningful work being done on and off the stage by dedicated teachers and students in high school theater programs. When Shorecrest Performing Arts presented "Lord of the Pies" under the direction of Michael McCarthy in November 2022, adjudicators from Broadway Star of the Future attended. Shorecrest received the following nominations:

Outstanding Performer in a Lead Role in a Play:
Lauren Brumbelow '24 - Franny

Outstanding Technical Achievement:
Story Pennock '24 - Costume Design

Since 2009, the Straz Center’s Broadway Star of the Future Program has celebrated outstanding student achievement in high school theater. The Broadway Star of the Future Awards program is the Tampa Bay area’s regional awards program affiliated with the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) or the Jimmy Awards®, named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theater owner and producer.

Adjudicators will also be invited to attend "Mamma Mia!" in the spring. The 2023 Broadway Star of the Future Award recipients will be determined from a complete list of nominations. The Award recipients will be announced in May 2023.
