J.A.G. on the Air

by Sarah Anderson, Upper School Math Teacher
One of our Upper School Service Week groups worked with Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. Goodwill has implemented a program called J.A.G.: Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill. Our students had the opportunity to learn a lot about the different ways Goodwill serves our community as J.A.G. members.

On Monday and Tuesday, students toured the Goodwill St. Petersburg Store on Gandy Blvd., where they worked side-by-side with people with developmental disabilities in the "life skills" program. They also served in the Gandy retail and outlet centers organizing clothing and household items.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Chargers served in the BookWorks program. BookWorks promotes literacy by distributing books to children from low-income families. Goodwill volunteers read to children at Head Start centers and other locations, and then present each child with a personalized book to take home. Shorecrest Service Week volunteers counted, sorted, and cleaned children's books that were donated to Goodwill. Then they went to some local daycare facilities and read to young children. Each child was presented with his or her own book to take home.

Scott Coursen, the Service Coordinator at Goodwill, kept the group organized and fed. He was amazing to work with, and helped the students learn a lot!

A few weeks later, Scott asked if any of the Shorecrest volunteers could go on the air with Goodwill on Mix 100.7's iHeartRadio to talk about their experiences. Sophomores Lily S and Taylor M were selected to go to the radio station to record a 30-minute segment about working as part of the J.A.G. Program for an iHeartRadio Community Story. There were also two representatives from Goodwill who spoke to the many programs Goodwill runs.
