Service Week 2018 Wrap-Up

by Diego Duran-Medina, Director of Service Learning
From March 12-15, 2018, Upper School students, faculty and staff undertook a massive civic engagement operation across 22 different service projects spanning Tampa Bay, our country, and abroad - culminating 8 months of preparation.

Our students worked with the Lakota community in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, helped improve our National and State Parks in North Carolina and Tennessee, and traveled to France for a cross-cultural exchange with meaningful service.

They served across 18 local sites and worked with animals in aquariums, rescues and training sites (primates, sea creatures, horses, guide dog puppies and more), helped the elderly through technology at Sunshine Center and Westminster Palms and assisted families rebuilding their lives through projects at Goodwill and CASA. They cleaned up our beaches and environment with Keeping Pinellas Beautiful, Fort De Soto and various local parks and farms. They fed children at The Kind Mouse and help educate and inspire at Great Explorations Museum. They built homes through Habitat for Humanity, built beds for families and made beautiful artwork that brought joy.

We are proud of their work and commitment!

We don't just count the hours, and yet we know that our students provided over 5,000 hours of service that week

We made the hours count, so we know our students will serve with humility, respect, compassion, integrity and wonder.

Service Week is Shorecrest's statement to the world that we care about building compassionate, socially responsible citizens.
