Middle School: Grades 5-8

Welcome to the Middle School at Shorecrest!

The Middle School years are a remarkable growth opportunity for children. Only the first two years of life mirror the broad development a child experiences from Grades 5-8.

It is our intention in Middle School to support your children, to give them choices over the years (science fair, history fair, project work) and most importantly to create balance in all that we do including the arts, our academics and athletics. Our wheel classes offer the best in art, technology, music, drama and debate. Our PE program is vibrant, rich and builds on skills as your child matures through junior high school years. Our clubs range from Model UN to Jr. Thespians to Forensics. Every year our student leadership group proposes new activities for students to participate in.

Each morning, groups of students meet with advisors in the Circle of Power and Respect (CPR), part of our advisory program. These first twenty minutes include games, activities, conversations and parties. It is a time to allow your child to “settle in” with the company of friends before we start our day. Grades 7 and 8 model the Upper School as we gather at the pavilion for a community-sharing event every Friday.

In the Middle School, we focus on field experiences as ways to strengthen our CPR bonds and allow every student to feel trusted and respected. Our students in eighth grade go to Washington DC for four amazing days to experience the monuments, the museums, the White House, the Capitol Building and Williamsburg - for a more hands-on experience reliving American History and our country’s role in the global world. In sixth grade, our students do an overnight at Pathfinders in January to build on community and trust, utilizing high and low ropes course elements, tree climbing and kayaking. Seventh grade heads off to the Florida Keys in April to spend three warm and water-filled days at Marine Lab. Throughout the year in fifth grade there are day trips around St. Petersburg that include mangrove planting and SPCA work. Students benefit from this wealth of experiences as they connect with nature in a personal and hands-on way.

Our Middle School is a vibrant place with students learning and discovering daily. Come visit us!

Innovation and Design Studio

February 4, 2017 marked the official ribbon-cutting of the new Innovation & Design Studio in the Middle School at Shorecrest, a leading preschool-12th grade independent school in St. Pete.

“Hosting the ribbon-cutting in early 2017 tied in beautifully with our new Apple Distinguished School distinction and our hosting of the St. Pete STEAMfest,” says Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology Dr. Anna Baralt. “Plus we loved that the timing allowed us to have lots of concrete examples of the space in action and incredible results for students.”

The Innovation & Design Studio is the result of a major renovation of what was formerly the Middle School Art Studio. The impetus to overhaul the space came from two forward-thinking Shorecrest Middle School teachers, Art Teacher Cindy Williams and Christine Scoby, Instructional Technologist and Curriculum Dean. The two have worked collaboratively over the past three years to implement a curriculum that merges Art and Technology to activate deeper learning across curricula and grade levels. [more]
