Field Experience Learning

Students in Grades 6-8 participate with their teachers in extensions of classroom learning through overnight field experiences. These programs are at the heart of best educational practice providing real world opportunities through integrated learning. It is anticipated that all our students will participate in our field experiences at each grade level (Grade 5 students will have a variety of day trip experiences enriching their academic programs.)

Note: There is no school coverage for students not participating in field experiences. Families must make alternative arrangements for their children during these time periods for non-attendees.

List of 4 items.

  • Eighth Grade: Washington DC

A four-day/three-night excursion to our nation’s capital. Eighth grade trips to Washington DC are a rite of passage in many independent schools, and our trip is an important link to our students’ understanding of our country, our culture, and America’s role in the global community. This trip builds beautifully on two years of global studies in Grades 5 and 6 social studies and two years of American experience in Grades 7 and 8. Integrating social studies, English, world languages, art, architecture, math and science, students visit historical sites such as the Capitol, historical monuments on the Mall, and many museums including Smithsonian sites.
  • Seventh Grade: Marine Lab

This three-day/two-night experiential marine science and environmental studies opportunity located on Key Largo in the Florida Keys. This trip bridges Life Science (Grade 7) with Marine Science (Grade 8). Students study marine life and water ecosystems in still pools, as well as in and around coral reefs. Students' time is divided among lab work, snorkeling, playing and studying. Awareness of the  fragile nature of our marine environments is a cornerstone of the marine lab mission and this program fosters critical thinking and hands on awareness of real world challenges.
  • Sixth Grade: Common Ground Adventures

A two-day/one-night field experience, Common Ground Adventures is a bonding, team-building opportunity. The trip focuses on critical thinking, decision making, and providing students with the opportunity to take risks and accept challenges in an outdoor learning environment.
