Writing and Formatting Standards

Composition

Unless otherwise noted here, Shorecrest publications should adhere to the Associated Press Stylebook. The Office of Marketing & Communications holds an annual subscription to the AP stylebook online: http://www.apstylebook.com/online.

Shorecrest Names and Standards -
  • Core Values should always be ordered - Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Knowledge and Compassion.
  • Themes should always be ordered - Choice, Support, Balance
  • Lower School, Middle School, Upper School (formerly Division, changed 2014)
  • The 3, 4 and 5 year old program at Shorecrest is The Experiential School (formerly Early Childhood Center or ECC, updated in 2014)
    • School abbreviation is ES
    • Official name is The Experiential School
    • Simply “Experiential School” when used as a modifier ex. “Experiential School students”
  • Abbreviations for the 4 schools [The Experiential School (ES), Lower School (LS), Middle School (MS), Upper School (US)] are capitalized; school names are always proper nouns
  • SCA – Shorecrest Community Association (formerly SPA, changed 2015)
  • College Center; College Counseling Team (confirmed 2015)
  • The Upper School week-long dedication to service is Service Week (formerly Minimester, as of 2015)
  • Makerspace is one word; it is not a proper noun
  • Relay For Life has a capital F, whereas Habitat for Humanity does not.
  • Janet Root Theatre (always ‘re’)
  • LMS is PowerSchool Learning (Haiku rebrand in 2016)
Alumni -
  • When writing about alumni - after identifying an alumnus/a with full name and graduation year, he or she may be noted by their last name only. Example
“Georgia Lenas ’15 won the national Silver Medal for visual art at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Lenas is the first Shorecrest student to win a national medal from Scholastic in visual art.”

Faculty -
  • When writing about faculty - after identifying the faculty member with full name, he or she may be noted by prefix/last name. Example:
“Shorecrest is pleased to welcome Sandy Janack to the Middle School faculty. Mrs. Janack will teach fifth grade social studies.”

Current Students -
  • Students in The Experiential School through Middle School are identified by first name, last initial only unless there is express permission from a parent.
  • Student in Grades 9-12 may be identified by their full name in promotions of academic achievements, performances, athletic events, or other accomplishments that warrant recognition.
Days/Times and Other Formatting -
  • Dates - months are spelled out in dates in paragraphs
  • Time: 7am, 8:30pm (no minutes if even hour, am/pm to follow immediately after time, no space)
  • Spell out the days of the week
  • Newsltter authors format: First Last, Division Subject Teacher
    • If athletic article: Team Coach First Last
    • If administrator: First Last, Title
Grades -
  • Spell out grades “fourth grade” “first grade” unless [pressed for space on social media]
  • Alpha, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten are capitalized.
  • Freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior are not, unless they begin a sentence.
Degrees -
Establishing academic credentials in text:
  • The AP Stylebook prefers you to write out the title of a degree in a phrase and to avoid using an abbreviation.
  • AP Style states that you should use an apostrophe in bachelor’s degree and master’s degree.
  • An associate degree, however, does not use an apostrophe.
  • There is also no apostrophe in Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science, etc.
Documents and Formatting -
  • All Shorecrest communications should use single spacing between sentences.
  • Recommending filenaming convention for documents shared in Google Drive is -  YYYY.MM.DD_Person or Department_Description of Conten
For example, a blog post written by Jonathan Davis on July 1, 2015 about Tech Tips would be named: 2015.07.01_Davis_Tech Tips Blog
  • Any files shared directly with the marketing department may be renamed per the file convention.
