MLK Day of Service - RSVP for Parade & Service Project

by Roderick Fludd, Director of Diversity and Inclusion
Once again the Shorecrest community will participate in St. Petersburg's Dream Big Parade (formerly the MLK Drum Major for Justice Parade.) The parade will be held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 21. Every member of the community is encouraged to wear your Charger Green & Gold and to march with us as the parade weaves through downtown St. Petersburg.

Parade Logistics:
  • A Shorecrest bus will depart from school to the staging area at 9:45am.
  • Mr. Fludd will check in the Shorecrest group at 10am.
  • All participants should plan to arrive downtown between 10-10:30am if you would like to represent Shorecrest and walk in the parade.
  • The gathering point for walkers is the seating area between the Dali Museum and the Mahaffey Theater.
The parade begins at 11am and will involve walking for approximately 2 miles; the bus will be available to sit in and ride along the route. The Shorecrest Charger community will march all the way to the Trop, handing out oodles of candy to folks along the parade route. (View photos from last year here.)

Service Project

For the service portion of the MLK Day of Service celebration, Chargers are invited to volunteer with our service partners at The Kind Mouse, an organization that helps to feed food insecure children in our local community. Shorecrest will help pack and sort food from 1-4pm on Monday, January 21. 10 volunteer spots are available. This event is open to all ages, including young children.

8-10 Volunteers needed to be at the CASA table at Tropicana Field after the parade to oversee necklace construction and to tell the CASA story, 2-5pm. The public will be encouraged to make a necklace for survivors who are admitted to shelter as a show of support from the community, but if they also want a necklace for themselves, they must make 2 necklaces.

For additional details or to reserve your spot contact Diego Duran-Medina, Shorecrest Director of Service Learning, at dduranmedina@shorecrest.org.

Symposium

Later that evening, Upper School History Teacher Ron Heller will be giving a lecture on the role of African American soldiers and Women in World War I. Learn more here.
