Diego Duran-Medina completes TEACH Fellowship
by Diego Duran-Medina, Director of Service Learning
Diego Duran-Medina, Shorecrest’s Director of Service-Learning, recently completed a Fellowship in the Middle East, representing Shorecrest while visiting the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. The fellowship was funded by private companies and the Bilateral Chamber of Commerce based out of Houston. Now in its ninth year, The TEACH Fellowship (Teachers Educating Across Cultures in Harmony) was conceived to produce a new generation of leaders equipped to provide solutions to the world’s most pressing social and economic issues.
The Fellowship included visits to both private and public schools, private companies and government organizations, all focused around exchanging ideas and best educational practices.
While there, Duran-Medina presented on a range of topics. One of his most memorable moments was when he was asked to address what it means to teach for global citizenship, and the role that service plays in developing citizens and living the values of compassion and empathy - values that are often talked about and explicitly taught at Shorecrest.
“It was an eye-opening experience, presenting civic engagement to a wide range of audiences, all with a varied understanding of service-learning and civic engagement”, says Duran-Medina.
Fourteen educators from across the country and levels of education were selected for the Fellowship, and Shorecrest was one of two independent schools represented in the cohort.
