Bay Grasses in Classes 2017
by Kathryn Jeakle, Marine Science Teacher
As part of Shorecrest's ongoing Bay Grasses in Classes project, eighth graders traveled to a donor marsh in Port Manatee on Wednesday, November 15, to harvest seashore paspalum. The seashore paspalum is a new species of bay grasses they will be growing on campus this year as part of a community restoration project that is sponsored by Tampa Bay Watch. In total, 78 students collected seashore paspalum, and once finished they help Lincoln Elementary School collect smooth cordgrass for their school.
Shorecrest eighth graders will be planting the seashore paspalum in pots back on campus with the help of third graders. Once planted, they will work on maintaining the grasses with the hopes of returning some of them back into the Bay in the spring.
