Boys Varsity Soccer Host Clinic at Academy Prep
by Coach Jason Montoya
On Wednesday, January 10, the Boys Varsity Soccer team hosted a soccer clinic for the middle school students at Academy Prep. The Shorecrest players were split into groups and charged with creating their own drills to teach ball control, passing/receiving, shooting and defending.
According to Coach Montoya, "It was a great opportunity for the guys to be put on the other side of things as they were coaches, they were the ones teaching, and they were the ones interacting with the young players. As some players have said once put to the test/fire, 'Coaching is a lot harder than it looks.'"
The Chargers held their own as coaches, teaching basic skills and encouraging and supporting the younger students at Academy Prep.
"It was interesting to see the guys work together, problem solve, think on their feet of how to explain something, and to think back of drills that they did when they were just learning the game. It was a new experience, a different experience, one that got the players out of their comfort zone, and personally I thought it was awesome!" Coach Montoya continued.
More than just the skills and excitement of competition, the Chargers reflected on the other lessons they learn through soccer - resilience, accountability, facing adversity, and more. Working with the Academy Prep students reinforced the value of being connected to the greater community and building relationships through Athletics.
