Shorecrest Chargers Athletics

Athletics at Shorecrest play an essential role in the School's Mission, providing experiences that develop our student-athletes physically, emotionally and intellectually. Although Shorecrest Chargers are encouraged and inspired to excel and to win, good sportsmanship is our primary goal.

Levels of Competition and Program Development

Varsity: Competing and Winning at the Highest Athletic Level

Objective: To raise the level of commitment and development through focused training, competitive drive and winning. Competing and winning at the highest athletic level is the goal of Varsity sports. Student–athletes at this level will have access to coaching and training resources to promote team success and optimize individual development and performance.

Impact: Athletics is a privilege, not a right. There are no game playtime guarantees for Varsity level student-athletes. Hardwork, dedication and performance are key components to increase chances of individual and team success. Seize the opportunity when given the chance to perform.
Junior Varsity: Preparing for and Developing Competition

Objective: To raise the level of commitment and development through focused training, competitive drive and winning. Developing and preparing student-athletes to compete at the highest athletic level is the goal of JV sports. Student–athletes at this level will have access to coaching and training resources to promote team success and optimize individual development and performance.

Impact: There is no predetermined game playtime allocation for JV level student-athletes. However, the goal of JV is to provide practice discipline and practical game experience for focused development of all players. Consistent with Varsity expectations, hardwork, dedication, and performance are key components to increase chances of individual and team success.
Middle School: The stepping-stone to JV & Varsity athletics

Objective: Skill development through team dynamics and competitive play. Each student-athlete will get an opportunity to experience practice and game situations through committed action, response and result activities.

Impact: Students who participate in MS sports are able to experience competition on a regular basis in a learning and encouraging environment. Development, growth, and maturity are key focuses of this educational level and MS athletics emphasizes the importance of supporting others through individual growth. This is the stepping-stone to JV/Varsity athletics.

Anthony McCall

Athletics Director

Anthony McCall and his wife Dolores joined the Shorecrest community in 2018, after serving for 21 years at Montgomery Academy in Montgomery, AL. Coach McCall began his career in the banking industry and later joined the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce where he served as the Director of Minority Business Development. In 1997, Coach McCall was named Dean of Students at Montgomery Academy. He remained in that position for ten years and coached boys basketball and football. In 2007, he was appointed Athletic Director, and during his tenure varsity teams won 33 State Championships and were State Runner-Up 15 times. Since Coach McCall assumed the role of AD, Chargers Athletics has secured two State Championships - Volleyball (2018) and Boys Soccer (2020), as well as a State Runner-up for Girls Soccer (2020). He currently coaches the Varsity Football team. Mr. McCall holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Auburn University.
Barry Bearden

Director of PE and Skill Development, Varsity Boys Basketball Coach

Barry Bearden joined the Shorecrest Physical Education Department and the boys’ basketball program as the varsity head coach in 2020. Coach Bearden, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, worked at The Altamont School in Birmingham for 15 years. During his tenure he served as a Physical Education instructor, Athletic Director and head basketball/tennis coach. As a tennis coach his boys’ team won the State Championship in 2010 and 2017 while finishing State Runner-up in 2016. His basketball teams competed in one the most competitive Areas in the state, but managed to win 4 Area Championships and advanced to 3 Regional finals. Coach Bearden has coached and mentored athletes in the Birmingham area who have matriculated at Auburn University, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Stanford, the University of Alabama and the University of Texas. He most recently served as the Assistant Head Coach at Huffman High School (Birmingham) where he helped the varsity basketball team capture the 6A State Championship. As a former athlete Coach Bearden excelled in basketball and was named to All-Metro and All-State teams at West End High School. After being recruited as a football and basketball player, Coach Bearden selected basketball and attended UAB where he was a starting point guard (he was also the school’s first ever quarterback). He spent a brief stint playing in Europe before ending his playing career.
Richard Cameron

Coach Richie Cameron has been teaching and coaching for nearly two decades. He began his career after graduating with his bachelor's degree from Oakwood University, teaching high school health and physical education in New City. Since then, Coach Cameron has also spent time as a classroom teacher, which included teaching various subject areas. Coach Cameron joined the Shorecrest faculty in 2011. He teaches health and fitness in ninth grade and is the Middle School and Varsity Track Coach and the Field, Strength and Performance Coach. Coach Cameron enjoys teaching, coaching, and relating to the students. He especially likes seeing his students and athletes accomplish things they never thought possible. Outside of Shorecrest, he enjoys spending time with his family and is an active member of his church. The Camerons have three Chargers.
Melinda Holmes

Athletics Administrative Assistant

Melinda has enjoyed various roles during her last 18 years working in independent schools. Most recently, she worked as the Director of Library Services and as a dorm parent for Darlington School in Rome, GA. Prior to her time in Georgia, she worked as the college counseling secretary and as a dormitory head at St. Catherine's School in Richmond, VA. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from James Madison University and a master's degree in School Librarianship from Longwood University. She is looking forward to using her organizational skills in her new role as Assistant to the Athletic Director at Shorecrest.

Melinda's husband, Marcus, is the Shorecrest Director of Facilities. They have two daughters in the Class of 2022 at the University of Georgia. Although Marcus loves to jump out of airplanes and scuba dive in deep waters, you'll find Melinda beside a pool reading or knitting.
