Our Philosophy

A Shorecrest education offers students choicesupport, and balance. Our approach to teaching strikes a balance between the progressive and the pragmatic, developing lifelong learners who excel not only in colleges and universities, but also in their professional and personal adult lives. At Shorecrest, we take pride in our college preparatory curriculum, which emphasizes the liberal arts, math, science and technology as well as global citizenship. In addition to pursuing excellence in academics, our Mission charges our students to strive for excellence in the arts, athletics, character development and service.

At Shorecrest we strive to create a learning environment where innovation and risk-taking are encouraged. We believe mutual respect is essential if students and teachers are to benefit from collaborative work. We support all members of our community in the positive development of intellectual, social, emotional and physical abilities and believe that high expectations lead to the best results.

As progressive educators, Shorecrest teachers are facilitators and directors who lead students on a path toward independence. We believe that students learn best when engaged in active, challenging and in-depth study. We seek ways to make activities both challenging and relevant to the real world. We believe that great teaching and learning requires strong student-teacher relationships and an understanding of students’ interests and abilities. By offering students choices in curriculum and programs, we allow students the opportunity to identify and then pursue their passions.

As pragmatists, Shorecrest teachers ensure that students grasp fundamental concepts, skills and knowledge. We understand that students will be asked to demonstrate knowledge on standardized tests as well as on the personalized assessments developed by faculty. We recognize that the ability to perform well on the full range of assessments opens opportunities. More importantly, students will have the necessary tools to become skilled communicators, problem solvers, researchers and analysts of information.

The Shorecrest community is united around our responsibility to nurture in our students a respect for themselves and others. Whether on the playground or when doing a service project, we encourage our students to understand and empathize with a diverse range of people both locally and in the broader world. In addition, the Honor Code, which charges all members of the community to be personally and academically honest and to treat others with respect and dignity, is essential for the education and development of all.

Diversity and Inclusion Statement

Shorecrest Preparatory School’s Board, administration, faculty, staff and school community are committed to the process of creating and sustaining an equitable and just community. At Shorecrest, all individuals are compelled to engage in the process of creating an environment where Shorecrest feels like home to all. The School embraces the wide variety of cultures, religions, languages, backgrounds, identities and perspectives that encompass the richness of humanity. Moved by our guiding Core Values, Shorecrest is a place where complex individual and group differences are met with respect and compassion. The Shorecrest community believes that our diverse culture enhances the school’s environment and prepares our students to become the next generation of global leaders.
