This past weekend, the Suncoast Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. held its second annual College Fair of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). As a graduate of an HBCU, I felt a strong sense of pride as I saw hundreds of people from the Tampa Bay Area exploring these institutions as options for furthering their education.
The sources of that pride were multiple. First, I was proud to see so many young people talking with college representatives about how the institution could serve them in their pursuit of future success. Next, I was moved by the feeling of 'family' between the schools themselves, demonstrating that the special experience I had at an HBCU is still alive and well. Finally, I was proud to be a part of the Shorecrest community, who offered up our beautiful venue and hosted this amazing event.
I would like to thank our partners from Jack and Jill, Crystal Pruitt and Dr. Toni Fort, for hosting this event on our campus. It shows the genuine connection of Shorecrest Preparatory School and the St. Petersburg community.
