Jacob Hoeffner finally knows what it’s like to stand at the top of the podium.
The John Carroll Catholic senior thrower, who was the state runner-up in the shot put and discus in 2018, claimed the Class 1A state title in the shot put on Friday at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
"This is great," Hoeffner said. "When they put the medal around my neck, I couldn't stop smiling. This is the moment I've been waiting for."
Despite less than ideal weather conditions, Hoeffner won the state title with a throw of 15.28 meters. Hoeffner ultimately won the gold medal with his first throw.
It was enough to hold off a late challenge from Shorecrest Prep's RJ Ayers '19, who had a throw of 15.20 meters on his final attempt.
