Learning from Dough and Slime

Playing with dough is not only fun but beneficial as well. Working with dough is great for strengthening muscle tone in little hands – squishing, squashing, rolling, and flattening dough all develop children's muscles to encourage prewriting and other skills such as cutting with scissors, using tweezers, holding a pencil, etc.
Alpha students first spent time simply exploring what their hands could do with the dough. They poked and pinched it, rolled it, patted it and smelled it. This particular dough was made with orange extract and lemonade mix. It smelled wonderful!
Later, they added rocks, shells and sea glass to the experience. The children were excited to decorate the dough. Others buried "treasures" inside the dough. Still, others made prints in the dough with the differently textured materials. They all watched each other and were interested in the many things they could do. It was a wonderful experience - one we will continue to build upon.
