Logan Stenger scored with 33:21 remaining in the second half to lead Shorecrest Prep past Fort Myers Canterbury in their Class A boys soccer region final Wednesday.
Stenger's goal came off of a short corner kick from Max Consoni. Stenger got control of the ball and beat Canterbury goalkeeper Ray Carreiro to the near post.
"This was a tough battle," Shorecrest coach Jason Montoya said. "I have a lot of respect for Canterbury and we knew it was going to be tough."
Shorecrest (17-1-2) will advance to play at Tallahassee Maclay on Saturday in the state semifinals. Canterbury finishes its season at 23-3.
The first half of the game was primarily played in the midfield with both teams trying to figure a way through the other's tight defense. Carreiro made the first tough save of the game, stopping Ronan Dillow on a shot from close range after the first 10 minutes. With 27:40 remaining in the first half, Canterbury had its first scoring opportunity but William Shea's shot from about 10 yards away was saved by Shorecrest goalkeeper Lucas Murphy.
Shorecrest increased the pressure in the second half, but Canterbury had some opportunities. Before Stenger's goal, Canterbury striker Patrick Horan had an open look but took his shot wide.
"I think we were a little nervous to start because we usually get knocked out in this round," Montoya said. "But once we got the ball moving and played our game, everything turned out right."
With 23 minutes remaining, Canterbury winger Camillo Lilleslatten had a shot at close range after a corner kick, but he hit it soft and Murphy made the save.
Canterbury picked up the pace with less than 10 minutes remaining but could not manage another shot on goal.
