Ms. Owen's class Studies Community

Lower School News

When studying “community,” first graders began by thinking about what a community is and what makes a community. In early discussions, they realized that first grade is a community! The class is a community of learners who share some common attributes and goals. They work to build an environment where everyone gets to play and learn. One fun community-building activity they have enjoyed is playing Giant Jenga. The children quickly caught on that it’s about working together toward a common goal. It’s fun to watch them strategize and cheer each other on!

During this study, they will learn that Chargers are a part of many communities - the classroom, Shorecrest, our neighborhood, St. Petersburg, Florida, our country, and the global community. They will continue to discuss what it means to be a member of a community and the important roles played in communities. First grade has several field experiences planned, including one to Big Blue, the construction site in Gulfport that many students visited last year when they were in kindergarten. They will see the finished project!
