First Graders Dive into Ocean Studies with ROV Lessons

Shorecrest eighth graders, under the guidance of Ms. Jeakle's Marine Science class, recently buddied up with Mrs. Sheppard's first graders. Together they operated Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in an ocean floor clean-up simulation.

The collaboration between the eighth and first graders could not have come at a more perfect time. First graders are immersing themselves in a comprehensive study of the ocean and its inhabitants. The exploration commenced with a deep dive into Coral Reefs, accompanied by hands-on experiences such as dissecting sea urchins with the assistance of Mrs. Peck, Upper School Science Teacher. They will continue researching the zones of the ocean and learning about various animals that live there. Mrs. Peck plans to return and dissect a squid to broaden their understanding of marine life.

Meanwhile, Shorecrest eighth graders annually engage in an innovative ROT/ROV project. They constructed ROVs equipped with motors and controllers, designed to tackle various underwater challenges. They have already shared their ROV knowledge with JK students, and now had the opportunity to extend their expertise to first grade. During the recent session, they showcased the functionality of their ROVs and let first graders operate the controllers.

Through hands-on learning experiences with ROVs, the first graders gained valuable insights into ocean conservation. They discovered how these robotic tools can play a pivotal role in removing trash from our oceans, safeguarding the lives of countless marine animals.

First graders will conclude their ocean studies unit in early May with a musical performance, "Commotion in the Ocean," and Project Share.

Educational interactions between students across different grade levels empower students to showcase what they have learned, support meaningful connections, and inspire student engagement.
