Kathryn Jeakle Receives Marine Science Educator of the Year Nomination
Shorecrest Preparatory School is proud to share that eighth grade Marine Science Teacher, Kathryn Jeakle, has been nominated for the 2026 John Beakley “Marine Science Educator of the Year” Award by the Florida Marine Science Educators Association (FMSEA). This prestigious nomination recognizes educators who have made significant contributions to the field and who are committed to inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards. Ms. Jeakle will be celebrated at the 2026 FMSEA Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet in Fort Pierce, where colleagues from around Florida will gather to honor excellence in marine education.
In Shorecrest’s eighth grade Marine Science course, Ms. Jeakle guides students through a comprehensive study of the ocean through the lenses of chemistry, earth science, physics and life science. From examining waves, tides and deep-sea features - to analyzing water quality and exploring human impacts on local watersheds - students engage in hands-on labs, place-based field experiences, and service learning through programs such as the Coastal Awareness Program and Bay Grasses in Classes. A culminating Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) engineering project challenges students to design and build a functioning underwater vehicle, making innovation and inquiry tangible and memorable. With 29 years of teaching experience spanning Michigan, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico, Kathryn brings a global perspective and a deep passion for environmental education to her classroom. She is also a part-time educator for Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center in downtown St. Petersburg, and a Shorecrest alumni parent to Alex Alvarez ‘21.
Shorecrest celebrates this well-deserved recognition of Kathryn’s dedication, guidance and lasting impact on marine science education.
Valerie Gaynor, President-Elect & Awards Chair of FMSEA, was the first to share about the nomination. “On behalf of the FMSEA Board of Directors, thank you for all you do to promote marine science and inspire the next generation of ocean leaders in Florida. These awards serve to recognize significant contributions to the marine science education field.”
Founded in 1968, FMSEA is a regional chapter of the National Marine Educators Association and is dedicated to advancing marine science education and environmental stewardship across the state. The FMSEA Outstanding Marine Educator Award began in 1986. It was renamed in 1999 in honor of John Beakley, a Marine Science resource teacher in Palm Beach County and one of FMSEA’s founders.
